MONTAGU-E E. PERKINS, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,589, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed August 12, 1397- Serial No. 648,050. (N model.)
, To 00% whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MONTAGUEE. PERKINS, acitizen of the United States, residingat Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-IIolders,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bag-holders; and the main objects of my improvementare simplicity and economyin construction and efficiency and convenience in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my bag-holder, the lower part of the standard upon which it is supported being represented as broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan View of thesame. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a detached front elevation, of the supporting bracket for my bag-holder.
A designates the frame of my bag-holder, the same being substantially a strap or plate like structure bent flatwise on two transverse lines and forming, when said bent plate is seen in edge View, three sides of a right-angled rectangular figure. For convenience I will divide this frame into three parts the back 5 and sides 6 6, the lower portions of which sides are perforated and act as strippers. On the upper edge of the sides I form or secure suitable hinge-lugs 7, to which I pivot the hinge-lugs 8 of the swinging wings 9. The particular manner of forming the hinge-lugs or hinges is immaterial so long as the wings are hinged or pivoted from their upper edge to the sides 6 6. each Wing is provided with any desired number of upwardly -curvedpoints 10, facing outwardlyand extending through holes in the stripperportion of the sides 6 6 when the wings are swung downwardly, as shown. The rear end of each wing is also provided with a lug 11.
Upon the front side of the back 5 of the frame I pivot the lever 12 on the pin or fulcrum 13, and one end of said lever has attached to it or formed thereon a handle 14, that projects to one side of the bag-holder, as shown. This lever is connected with the lugs 11 of the wings 9 by means of links 15, pivoted by one end to said lugs and by their other end to the said lever, as shown. Projecting from the front of the back 5 of the frame A The lower part of is a stop 16 for limiting the swinging movement of said wings when moving away from the sides 6 6. I prefer to employaspringfor holding the parts in their normal position. As shown, the spring 17 is formed of wire, with one end hooked over the stop 16, its body extended under the fulcrum 13 of the lever, and its opposite end hooked over the upper edge of the lever 12, as at 18.
The bag-holder thus far described when secured to any suitable support is an operative device; but I prefer to provide the same with a bracket 19 and bracket-plate 20 for adjustably supporting the bag-holder at different heights, The bracket 19 is designed to be secured by its body or middle portion on the rear side of the back 5 of the frame A. Its upper end is bifurcated and provided with two hooks 21 while its lower end, which is turned rearwardly, is provided with a central slot 22, Fig. 4. The bracket-plate 20 is providedwith a series of notches 23 at each edge and in its front face with a forwardly-projecting mid-rib 24. Thebracketplate 20 may be secured to a standard 25 or to any other suitable support. I prefer to have the standard or support to which the bracketplate is secured of less width than the width of the plate between its notches 23, whereby said standard will not be in the way of the hooks 21 of the bracket-plate; but if the stand ard or support is wider suitable recesses may be cut therein to receive'said hooks.
The bag-holder is secured to the bracketplate 20 by passing the hooks through the notches 23 in said plate, so that the edge of the metal at the lower sides of the recesses 23 may be received within said hooks, as best shown in Fig. 3, while the mid-rib 2i enters the central slot 22 of the bracket, thus securely attaching the bag-holder in position for use. The seriesof notches in the bracketplate will enable the "holder to be set at any desired height. a A bag isthen secured by its mouth to the saidholder by drawing thesame on over the points lO, letting thepointspass through the fabric of the bag, saidibag being 1 drawn taut on. the back and two; fixed sides bag. The stop 16-will prevent the right-hand practically unobstructed. If the bag is accidentally overfilled, the three-sided form of frame,'which is an important feature of my. invention, permits of the useof a scoop in- 5- troduced from the front in removing the surwing and its link from being moved so far as to pass the .dead-center, and consequently the spring will always restore the parts to their normal position. The points being curved substantially concentrically to theaxis of the wings, they are withdrawn very easily, while at the same time their upwardlycurved form prevents the bag from accidentally slipping off.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a bag-holder, the frame consisting of a strap or plate like structure bent flatwise on two transverse lines and forming when seen in edge view three sides of a right-angled figure, the sides 6, 6, of which are provided at their upper edge with hinge-lugs and toward their lower edge with the stripper portion, in combination with the swinging wings pivot-ed to the hinge-lugs of said frame by their upper /dge, and carrying at their lower portion curved points that register with the openings therefor in the stripper portions of said sides, and means for operating said wings, substantially as described.
2. In a bag-holder, the combination of the frame having the back 5 and the two fixed sides 6, 6, the lower, portions of which fixed sides serve as strippers, the swinging wings 9 pivoted by their upper edges to the said stripper sides and extending downwardly inside of the said stripper sides, the upwardly-curved and outwardly-projecting points mounted on said wings near their lower edge, and mechanism for swinging said wings to and from said stripper sides to project and withdraw the said points through said sides in a curve path, substantially as described.
3. In a bag-holder, the combination of the bracket 19 having the pair of hooks 2 1 at its upper edge with a space between said hooks, and the rearwardly extended and slotted lower end, with the bracket-plate of T form in plan or end view, having its mid-rib adapted to be engaged by the slotted lower end of the said bracket and with the hacker cross piece'of the said T-shaped bracketplate having in its opposite edges the series of side notches for receiving the said hooks 21, substantially as described.
