RAPHAEL LIEUX, OF NEWV ROADS, LOUISIANA.
HAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,514, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed May 25, 1897. Serial No- 638,069. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RAPHAEL LIEUX, of New Roads, in the parish of Pointe Ooupe and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to head-gear,the object of the same being to provide a simple, cheap, and light hat for laborers use which will effectually protect the head against the sun when working in the fields or other exposed places. v
The invention consists of certain novel features and details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved hat applied. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same detached, with the cover and lining both removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The frame of my hatis made up of a series of supporting-ribs 1 1, preferably constructed of reed, rush, or other light material, con-f nected at their upper ends by means of a cord 2, passing through transverse openings 3 therein a short distance from their extremities, the said ribs being also attached at their meeting-points to the upper end of a short vertically-disposed stem 4: by having their terminals entering sockets or. depressions formed in the sides of the said stem. Connected to the supporting-ribs 1 lat points intermediate of their ends are straight radiallydisposed bracing-ribs 5 5, which cross intermediate of their ends and are secured to each other at the point of crossing and to the lower end of the stem 4. Upon the outer surface of the frame is secured in any suitable mannor a covering 6 of suitable fabric. A lining 7 of similar material is secured to the inner side of the supporting-ribs l 1," said supporting-ribs being also connected at their lower ends by means of a cord 8, passing through openings therein and wrapped around each rib to hold them in fixed relation. The lining or inner covering 7 is secured to the lower side of the straight braces and to the inner side of the ribs below the plane of the braces. The air-space formed between the two coverings 6 and 7 assists materially in modifying the action of the suns rays and affording protection to the wearer.
A headband 10 is suspended from the ribs and has rigid connection therewith by means of upwardly-divergent arms 9. The band is of a size to snugly fit around the head of the wearer and retain the hat in position when Worn and may be formed of any suitable material. The arms 9 have rigid connection at their ends with the head-band and the ribs, respectively, and are stiff, so as to retain the parts in proper position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have devised an extremely simple, light, and effective hat for use of farm-hands and others to protect the head of the wearer from the rays of the sun. The head fitting within the band 10, which is located at the lower ends of the arms 9 9, supports the hat a short distance above the head and provides for the free circulation of air.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1." In a sunshade-hat, the combination of a vertical stem having 'a series of sockets around its upper end, ribs having their upper terminals .fitted into the said sockets and provided with transverse openings 2. short distance from their extremities, a cord passing through the said openings and connecting the upper end portions of the ribs, straight braces crossing intermediate of their ends and secured at their point of crossing to the lower end of the vertical stem and at their outer ends to the ribs between their extremities, a cord passing through openings in the lower ends of the ribs and wrapped around each rib to hold them in fixed relation, a covering placed over the ribs, and a head-band suspended from the ribs and having rigid connection therewith, substantially as described.
2. A sunshade-hat, comprising a vertical stem having a series of sockets around. its upper end, ribs having their upper terminals fitted into the said sockets and provided with transverse openings a short distance from their upper extremities, a cord passing through the said openings and connecting the upper end portions of the ribs, straight braces crossing intermediate of their ends and secured at their point of crossing to one another and to the lower end of the vertical stem and at their outer ends to the ribs at a point between their extremities, a cord passing through openings in the lower ends of the ribs and wrapped around each to hold them in fixed relation, an outer covering placed over the ribs, an inner covering secured to ing Witnesses.
, RAPHAEL LIEUX.
