DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,214, dated August 16,1898. Application filed February 16, 1898. Serial No. $70,542: (N0 model.)
ful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for limiting the opening in doors; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
The annexed drawings,to which reference is 1nade,fully illustrate my invention,in which- Figure 1 represents a front or face view of my device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4: are detail views.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a portion of an ordinary door, and a is a portion of thejamb.
To the door A, near the edge thereof, is secured a plate I), having a groove c and lugs or ears d d at or near the outer end. Within this groove 0 is arranged a fiat spring e,which is secured to said plate at f, while the free end 9 has its bearing upon the cam h, formed upon the end i of the sectional arm j, which end is pivoted at 70 to the lugs or ears d d of the plate I). This cam has a depressed portion Z, in which the free end of the spring drops when the arm is folded back and not in use. This arm, which limits the space between the jamb and door, is composed of two sections on m which are hin ed to one an-j 7 23 other at n, and the section this provided with a spring 0, secured at p to said'section, while the free end q engages a notch or shoulder r in the section on, which spring holds the two sections in an extended position, presenting one arm, and at the same time the section m" can be folded upon the section m, if desired.
The free end of the locking-arm, asat s, is provided with rollers t t on either side, which travel back and forth in the box to on the plate 1), which is secured to the jamb. The forward end of the arm travels in a slot w,which is closed at one end so and open at y at the opposite end, having a flaring mouth 2, in which the rollers enter and leave the box.
This slotted box has inwardly-projecting flanges, between which and the bodyof the plate the rollers move when the dooris opened or closed, anda handle a is secured to the end of the arm.
The lugs 01 d are cut away at b b, which curved portion thereof receives the free end of the arm when in a folded position, and thus retains the same in place when the device is not in use.
It will thus be seen that when the door is opened and the arm is connected to the boxplate on the jamb the door can be opened to a limited degree, and thus prevent undesirable persons entrance to the dwelling, when conversation can be had through the limited opening; but when it is desired to open the door wide and when not using the device the sectional arm is disengaged from the boxplate and folded back upon itself, where it is retained by the pressure of the end of the flat spring upon the depressed portion of the cam. Said spring at all times has a pressure upon the arm, and when the arm is connected to the box-plate the pressure keeps the rollers upon theplate in the box, and a device as herein described is durable, not liable to get out of order, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. The combination with the doorplate having the lugs,'and the box-plate having the slot and flanges, of the locking-arm,composed of two sections, and the fiat spring, said arm pivoted to the lugsand provided with the cam and depression, on which the free end of the spring e, presses and the section m, having the notch, the spring secured to the section m; the hooked end thereof engaging said notch and the rollers journaled to the end of the section m, all substantially as described. p,
2. Ina door-checking device of the character herein described the combination of the box-plate, having the slotand inner flanges and flaring mouth, the plate secured to the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature door having lugs, one side of said lugs being in presence of two Witnesses. cut aWa to receive the end of the arm when in its fo l ded positi0n,the arm composed of NELSON SHAVV' 5 sections, the holding-spring and the spring Witnesses:
connecting the two sections When the arm is WALTER B. SANFORD, extended, substantially as described. LUDGER VILON.
