To @ZZ whom, t may concern: Be it known that I, ARTHUR ME YERE, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The herein-described invention, whilegenerally relating to improvements in garmentsupporters, is especially designed as a retain- `the drawers, has proven of very doubtful value as a means for preserving the bosom .free from crumpling, and particularly the lower part thereof. Therefore it is the object of the present invention to allow all proper yielding of the bosom With the bending of the body, and by virtue of the tension applied thereto by the retaining device to cause the bosom to return to its normal and unruffled condition. p

The invention consists in certain novel features in the arrangement and construction of i part-s, all as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1V illustrates the invention as applied; Fig. 2, a view showing the device straightened out to its full length; Fig. 3, a perspective viewof a self-acting fastener for holding together the two tension-bands and admitting of their adjustment, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal sectional view taken through the center of Fig. 2.

The bosom-retainer is preferably composed of two tension-bands A and B, which are held together at a point about midway their length and so as to slightly cross each other by means of a fastening device C, which while retaining the bands and permitting longitudinal adjustment thereof also provides for the selfadjustment of the angle in which the bands may be desired to cross each other, whereby to bring the ends the proper distance apart at their points of fastening on the shirt-bosom.

For the application of the bosom-retainer it is only necessary to provide the bosom along its edge on both sides with buttonholes, preferably three inches apart, in which can be readily inserted the well-known form of collar-button D, and upon these buttons is readily fitted the metal loop-fastenerE,with which the ends of the bands are provided, or it may be desirable to simply provide the bands with buttonholes and button them on the buttons D in the Well-known manner. In the preferred form o f button-attaching device shown the bands are secured thereto by being looped over a bar F, formed in the fastener by the cutting of parallel slots, and through these slots the end of the band passes and is secured back upon itself by a buckle orl slide G, which permits a regulation of the length of the bands to meet the requirements of the person wearing the device.

As the"facility with which the device performs its purposes depends much on the readiness of adjustment, the intermediate fastener C is of great importance to that end.4 It comprises two metal plates H and I of similar construction, being preferably of greater length than width. These plates are centrally pivotcdv together and each slotted, as at .I and K, at both ends to' form a buckle or.slide,through which the bands may pass and be held. In the position shown in Fig. 3 the plates may be readily threaded with the bands or the bauds may be adjusted back and. forth while at an angle to each other. It will be observed that the bands are so passed through the slots J and K as to bring a buckled portion of the band at each end of the plates and on the side of their contacting faces, whereby a bind or clamping function is performed by the plates when brought parallel, as in Figs. 2 ande, av

position which they will assume automatically when the bands have their pull approXimately in the same direction, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 4.

While the buttonholes for the button D have been illustrated as being formed inthe shirt-bosom, it is obvious that they may be IOO provided in the shirt j ust outside of the bosom, and for this change in their location it Will be desirable to reinforce the shirt for this purpose or provide the shirt with aps at each side of the bosom, the buttonholes being formed therein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Aretaining device for shirt-bosoms, comprising the bands A and B, adapted to normally cross each other, and means for holding the bands in their crossed position, the said means consisting of two plates pivoted together, and adapted each to receive a band and, by reason of their joint action, to cause K said bands to bind against each other when the pull on the bands is such as to bring said plates lengthwise of each other, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a retaining device for shirt-bosoms,

the combination with retaining-bands, of a self-binding fastener for said bands, the same comprising two plates pivotally connected, and each provided with one or more slots or openings near its ends for the passage therethrough of said bands, respectively, whereby to hold the same and bring the bands in binding contact between the said plates, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of two plates, each being of greater length than width, centrally pivoted togetherand provided with abucklebar at each end, as and for the purpose set forth. l
