Description

N. PETERS, PHOTQLHHOGRAPHER WASH NGTUN n c l, vuiten-gisten getraut @fre- ALBERT JOHNSON AND SYDNEY E. ALLEN, OF RALEIGH, NORTH OAROLTN A.
Letters Patent No.l 60,897, dated January 1, 1867.
nrnovn'n ALARM GUN.
Bc it known that we, ALBERT JOHNSON and SVYDNEYE. ALLEN, of Raleigh, in the county ot' Wake, and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and improved Alarm Gun;- and we do hereby declare that ,the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description thereof,'which Will enable others skilled in theart to make and -use the same, reference being had to the aecompanyingldrawings, forming part of this specicatioil.
The present invention relates to a new and improved alarm gun with which persons may' be warned of the approach of burglars or thieves, the gun being susceptible' of being so set or adjusted as to fire in any direction.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improved alarm gun is illustrated- Figure 1, being a side elevation of view 'of our improved alarm gun; and v Figure 2, a plan or top view'of the same. Y'
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings-represents the support for the alarm, consisting of a three-armed base, B, provided with a centre upright socket, C; D, the gun'barrel, provided withinJ trunnion pin or stud, E, upon its under side, at such point of its length as will cause it to be evenly balanced. By this trunnion pin the gun barrel turns in the upper end of the socket upright, C. F, the nipple of the gun barrel D. This nipple is upon the upper side of the barrel over its point of support or suspension in the upright C. H, a hammer block, secured to thc outer end, I, of a spring-arm, J, attached by its other end, K, to thenpper end of the post L secured to the base plate B at the outer end of oue of three arms. (To the under side of the spring-arm J', between its point of attach ment to the post L, and its hammer block` H, a trigger-arm, M, is secured, which, when the hammer is to be adjusted for operation, is placedover or set upon the upper edge of the projecting arm, P, of the'gunbarrel D.
Q, an arm secured to upper side 'of gun barrel, across the point VWhere the nipple 'is attached, which arm extends across the gun barrel projecting from each side of the same, with such end of the same as projects over the arnnP, of the gun barrel Aprovided with an opening, T, in the same, to allow the trigger-arm M to be set upon said barrel-arm P. In the use of vmy improved alarm gun, constructed asabove described, after the gunv barrel is loaded it is rst set by the prongs, V, of its base, in the most desirable 'position for operation; when, settingthe trigger-arm M upon the gun-arm P, it is ready for operatiomor., inl other words, the gun hammer cocked, sol that if the gun barrel, by its cross-arm Q, be swung' upon upright C, the hammer will be Atripped by such arm acting upon the trigger M, and thus the hammer set free to fall upon the nipple of the gun barrel, and thereby, through the percussion cap placed upon it, thecontents of the gun barrel will be discharged, producing 'thedesired alarm.
From the above description of my improved alarm, it is plainly obvious that if a gun be used having several barrels pointing in opposite and various directions, by .changing either one or moreol the said barrels the gun can be thus Yadjusted to discharge in any desired direction.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent- The base A, gun barrel D, spring hammer and trigger-arm J, and arms P and Q attached to barrel, when all constructed and combined together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of our invention signed by ns this second day of November, 1866.'
ALBERT JOHNSON, SYDNEYE. ALLEN.
