GEORG HACKER, OF CANNONSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BROOIVl-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,671, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed January 25, 1898. Serial No. 667,882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gaone HACKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cannonsburg, in the county of Washington Vand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear7 and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a broom-case adapted to hide the broom from view and having means to grip the handle of the broom and sustain the weight of the latter.
With this object in view the invention consists of the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will-be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the broom-case open, the standard being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the broom in position, the door of the case being removed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the case closed, the standard being partly broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several igures.
A represents the case or box to receive the broom and may be of any size desired, and A. is a standard extending upwardly from the rear side of the case. This standard may be either integral with the side or a separate strip secured thereto. The front side of the case is a hinged door cl., provided with a latch j a, adapted to engage the catch b2 on one end of the case. The case is provided with feet a2 to elevate the bottom of the case above the floor or ground.
B is a foot-lever pivoted intermediate its ends to a lug b, depending from the bottom of the case. The end of the lever remote from the latch is provided with a foot-piece l5', which projects beyond the vertical plane of the case, and to the other end of said lever a rod C is secured by means of a rivet c2 or other suitable means. Thisrod extends vertically up through the bottom of the case,
and its upper portion c is bent to lie in a substantially horizontal plane and projects below the latch a when the latter is engaged with the catch. v A recess a3 is formed in the edge of the door for the passage of the bent end c. A spring c is interposed between the bottom of the case and the lever B at a point between the lug b and rod C and normally holds the rod in its lowest position.
b' indicates a spring supported in any suitA able manner and tending normally to open the door.
D represents the broom, and al its handle. The standard A is provided near its upper end with a clamp adapted to receive the broom-handle and clamp it with sufficient force to sustain the weight of thebroom. As shown, the clampV is formed of two jaws cl2, pivotally connected to a plate d, which is secured in any suitable manner to the standard. Springs CZ3 normally force the jaws toward each other to clamp the handle, but will yield to permit the jaws to separate to release the handle.
.The body of my broom-ease will be made of Wood and can be made ornamental to suit the taste, andbeing of small dimensions it may be placed in a corner or out-of-tlieway place, yet always handy for use. Y When the broom is needed, the door can be opened by a pressure at the point B. This throws the latch out of place, and then the spring b opens the door.
While I show my broom-case with a provision for only one broom, I do not desire to restrict my invention to one, as the case may be made for two or more as well.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, ism
l. A broom-case having astandard extending upwardly therefrom and provided with a clamp to detachably hold the broomehandle, said case having a spring -actuated door, a latch and catch to hold the door closed, a footlever pivotally connected to the case, and a device operated by the lever to release the latch, substantially as described.
2. A broomscase having a standard entending upwardly therefrom and provided with a spring-clamp to detaehably hold the broomhandle, said case having a spring-actuated.
