Parana* STAMP AND ENVELOP-MOISTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,642, dated August 9, 189s. Application nea May 5,1897. sam No. 635,199. or@ man.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH Bedels, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp and Envelop Moisteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull,clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.`
My invention relates to improvements in envelop and stamp moisteners, the object of the same being to provide a simplified construction of device embodying certain advantages hereinafter more fully described, and
specifically set forth in the appended claims.4
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover removed, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the chamois attachment.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding` parts .throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a case or receptacle of any suitable form and provided with exterior ornamentation, if desired.Y In the present instance the case is constructed of barrel or cylinder shape and is provided with interior screwthreads 2 throughout its length and with eX- terior screw-threads 3,adjoining the top thereof, adapted to receive a bell-shaped covere;
which is provided with a pen-wiper 5, of cloth or other suitable material. The said case is also provided with a spout G, closed bya stopper 7.
A sponge 8 or other suitable absorbent ma-v terial is placed within the case or receptacle and is adapted to absorb the water or fluid contained therein. Y' 9 designates a covering or shielding of chamois, which is attached to a threaded ring lO,which is adapted to engage with the threads on the interior of the case. In practice the sponge is placed in'the'chamois in a dry condition and secured therein by inwardly-projecting spring-pressed clamps l1 on vthe in terior of the threaded ring and expands to completely ll the chamois en contact with the fluid contained within the case, The prevision of the screw-threaded ring enables the chamois and sponge to be adjusted in the case to keep the absorbent material always in contact with the fluid or moistening material and tocompensate for the loss of the latter. It will be understood that inuse the stamp or flap of the envelop is pressed down upon the chamois covering, through which will exude the Huid or moistening material.
The case or receptacle is designed to be filled with the iiuid or moistening material. Preferably I employ a mixture of chlorid of sodium, cologne, or some suitable perfume and water Vincorporated in suitable proportions. Thepurpose of the chlorid of sodium is to secure uniform dampness of the chamois at all times and the perfume to impart a pleasant odor to the moistenin g fluid. It will be observed that the spout 6 at the side of the cup subserves the purpose of providing a convenient means for replenishing the water-supply in the cup wit-hout separating any of the parts and is at the same time adapted to be tightly closed to prevent evaporation at this point. This a feature which I believe to be new, and its importance will be readily perceived.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' l. In stamp and envelop moisteners, the combination of an interiorly-threaded case or receptacle, an eXteriorly-threaded clampingring movable up and down therein, a sheathing or cover of chamois or fabric attached to the said clamping-ring, and absorbent material filling said covering or sheathing, subn stantially as described. f
2. An envelop and stamp moistener, comprising an interiorly-threaded case or receptacle, a clamping ring adjustable up and down therein and provided on the interior thereof with spring-pressed clamps, a sheathing or covering of Vchamois or fabric attached to the said ring, and absorbent material fill-= ing said sheathing or covering and retained in position by the said spring-pressed clamps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribe ing witnesses.
