GRATING -MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,604, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed July 1, 1897. Serial No. 643,052. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS B. Hosrnrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grating or Shredding Machines, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention has relation to a machine for grating or shredding cheese, eocoanut, bread, 850., and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of such a grater.
The nature and scope of my-invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a grating or shredding machine embodying main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 00 a? of the shredding or grating disk of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, a represents the standard or base of the machine, preferably provided withlips a a, adapted to fit the edge of a table or other suitable support and having a set-screw a adapted to clamp the standard to its support. The standard a supports a semicircular holder Z),in which the article to be grated or shredded is adapted to be mounted. This holderby preference is open at both ends and has in its base a channel or guideway 1), formed at the rear end portion in enlargements b constituting back-stops for a purpose to be presently described. The channel or guideway I) is adapted to receive and guide the lugs (Z d of the feeding device (Z. This feeding device at is provided with an arm or handle (1 terminating in a semicircular plate or disk d and is supported by the handle d in horizontal position and by the disk or plate d in vertical position through the engagement of the lugs 61 with the guideway Z) of said holder Z). At or about the middle of the disk or plate (Z is provided a recess or offset (1 adapted to be brought into engagement with a lug to be presently explained. At the front end of the holder b is located a bridge or bracket e, suitably united to said holder and having an ear c, constituting a bearing for a pin or stud c on which the rotary shredding or grating disk f is axially mounted. .On the under side of the bridge or bracket e is provided a lug e adapted to be brought into engagement with the recess or offset d of the feeding device (Z to prevent contact of the said device with the shredding or grating disk during actuation of the same. The disk f consists of a thin sheet of metal having a series of radially-arranged slits or lots f, one edge of each of which slits or slots is provided with a series of notches or teeth f The edges of the slots or slits f on the front face of the disk are beveled or countersunk, as at f and the teeth f preferably project from the inner face of thedisk on a plane with the bevel f, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The teeth f of one slit are preferably in staggered relationship to the teeth f of a succeeding slitthat is, a tooth of one slit is followed by an open space inthe next slit throughout the formation of the disk. By this preferred arrangement the surface to to be grated or shredded is evenly pared or scraped. The disk is preferably rotated by means ofa button or handle 70.
The mode of operation of the grating or shredding machine hereinbefore described is as follows: The substance-such as cheese,cocoanut,or the like-is placed in the holder and then forced forward in the direction of the inner face of the shredding or grating disk f by means of the feeding device d, and the disk,
as illustrated, then rotated by means of the button or handle is, and as the substance is gradually grated or shredded the feeding device is moved forward in the holder 1), with the lugs d cl engaging in 'the guideway Z), until the substance is entirely shredded or grated, and the recess or offset d in the top'of the feeding device is brought into engagement with the lug e on the under side of the bridge or bracket 6, spanning the holder, and. to the ear 6, on which the disk f is journaled or pivoted, when the feeding device may be retracted to its normal position-thatis, to rest against the enlargement b of the guideway h or released entirely from the holder b When the feeding device has been caused to engage with the lug (1 the disk f may still be rotated,because the limit of the shifting movement of the said device has been reached, and, moreover, withoutfear of contact of the same with the said disk, which would tend to destroy the teeth thereof if the feeding device should so contact,thereby destroying the same for subsequent grating or shredding purposes.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a grating or shredding machine, a semicircular holder provided with a bridge or bracket having a lug c and in the bottom with a channel or guideway, a disk having a series of slits therein, the edges of which on the front face of the disk are inwardly beveled, a series of projecting teeth arranged on the rear face along one edge of each slit of the series of said disk and projecting in the plane of the bevel on the front face of the same, and a semicircular feeding device provided with a recess 61 in front and with a rear operatinghandle, substantially as and for the purposes described.
