VEGETABLE CUTTER OR GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 688,137, dated December 3, 1901.
Application filed May 9,1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SUELLEN- TROP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Linn, in the county of Osage and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Cutter or Grater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices forcutting or grating vegetables; and the object is to provide a cutter and grater of simple construction by means of which vegetables may be rapidly prepared for table use.
I will describe a cutter and grater embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cutter and grater embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line mac of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a face view of a disk employed for grating.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a standard designed to be attached to a table or similar support or to the edge of a tub. For attaching it to a table or the like I provide it with two jaws 2 3, in one of which a set-screw 4 operates. These jaws are arranged horizontally; but when the device is designed to be connected to a tub for cutting cabbage to make sauer-kraut the jaws will be arranged vertically.
At the upper end of the standard or upright 1 is a tray 5, open at its front and rear and having at one side an inwardlyextended lip 6, with which material may be engaged for holding it tightly in the tray or rather for preventingits slipping upward when a person holds the material in the tray.
Connected to the upright is an arm 7, the upper end of which provides a bearing for a spindle 8, upon which a cutter is designed to be placed. In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown a disk-like cutter 9 for slicing cabbage, potatoes, or the like. This cutter has an angular center opening to engage the angular portion of the spindle 8, and it is held thereon by means of a thumb-nut 10, the spindle being provided at the outer end with a crank 11. The disk 9 is provided With radial slots 12, and one wall of each slot is turned outward or toward the tray 5 to form cutting-blades 13.
To prevent the cutting-disk from being forced Serial No. 59,390. (No model.)
outward by pressure against its inner side, I attach lugs 14 to the upright 1, which form bearings in which the edge of the disk engages, and the heads of the lugs bearing against the outer side of the disk will hold it closely against its work.
The cutting-disk shown in Fig. 3 is provided with openings, the walls of which are extended inward, as at 15, to form grating-surfaces, this device being designed for the grating or cutting of such material as horse-radish, cocoanut, or the like. i
In operation the material to be operated upon is to be held by one hand in the tray 5 and against the disk, which is to be rotated by means of the crank. The inwardly-turned lip 6, as before stated, will serve to prevent an upward movement of the material in the tray. The severed portions of the vegetable or the like will pass through the openings in the cutting-disk and fall into a receptacle arranged to receive them.
A device embodying myinvention is very simple in its construction and being very light may be easily moved from place to place, thus making it a convenient article for household use.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cutter or grater, comprising a standard, a tray on the upper end of the standard, an arm on the standard, a spindle having a bearing in said arm, a crank on the spindle, a cutter or grater on the spindle, and headed lugs on the standard for engaging the cutter or grater to hold it against its work, substantially as specified.
2. A cutter and grater, comprising an opentop standard or upright, a tray on the upper end of said standard or upright, and having an in wardly-turned lip at one edge, an arm on the upright, a spindle having a bearing in said arm, a crank on said spindle, and a cutter adapted to be mounted on said spindle at the rear end of the tray, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK SUELLENTROP.
