VEGETABLE-SLIGER.
Application filed February 17, 1916. Serial No. 78,948.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KIRK SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus Grove, in the county of Putnam, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Slicers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in vegetable slicers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is constructed in such a manner that vegetables can be easily and quickly sliced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, efficient in operation and one which will effectually slice vegetables, such as potatoes and cabbage or the like with very little exertion on the part of the user.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a slicer of this nature which consists of a minimum number of parts, and further one which can be conveniently clamped to a table or suitable support-for use.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Fig. 2is a rear View.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
The device consists of a circular plate 1, said plate being provided with a rectangular opening 2 which communicates with the rear end of the hopper 3, said hopper having fixed to its sides, brackets 1 in which are rotatably mounted the ends of the shaft 5, said shaft having fixed thereto the forward edge of the follower 6.
A. spring 7 is provided and has its ends connected to the brackets 4i and its intermediate portion bowed, as at 8 for engaging the upper surface of the follower 6, said spring serving to exert downward pressure on the follower so as to cause the same to yieldably engage the vegetables in the hopper so as to force the same through the opening 2 and against the cutting disk 9, said disk being provided with integral blades 10, saipl blades being formed by slitting the dis The periphery of the plate 1 is provided with an annular flange 11, which incloses the periphery of the disk 9, and serves as a protection against the danger of the hands coming in contact with the periphery of the disk when the same is in operation.
Fixed to the front face of the plate 1 is a bracket 12 which has its upper end provided with a bearing 13 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 14, said shaft having its rear end provided with a head 15 which is engaged in the central opening 16 of the plate and is suitably connected to the center of the disk 9. The forward end of the shaft 14 is journaled in the bearing 17 which is To the jaw 21 of the clamp is detachably connected the lower end of the vertical support 22, to the upper end of which is fixed a tray 23, said tray having its ends terminating in inclined flanges 24. The tray serves to catch the vegetables as they are sliced by 3 the blades 10 of the disk 9.
It will be noted that the jaw 21 of the clamp is provided with a rib 25 which extends into the notch 26 formed in the flange 11, said rib serving to aid in bracing the plate 1.
In operation the vegetables to be sliced are placed in the hopper 3, whereupon the follower will force the same through the opening 2 and in contact with the disk 9, and during which time the crank handle 19 is operated, thus imparting rotary movement of the disk 9 so that the cutting blades 10 will slice the vegetables which will fall upon the tray 23.
The support 22 has its lower end provided with a recess 27 which is also engaged by the rib 25, said rib serving to prevent the support from rotating.
What is claimed is A vegetable slicing machine comprising a vertically disposed circular plate having a marginal flange provided with a notch, said notches when alined being engaged by the in plate having an opening therein, a hopper rib. having communication With the opening for In testimony whereof, I aflix my signareceiving the vegetitble to be slicech aibraeklet 'tu'i'e, in the presence of two Witnesses. connected to the p ate, a jaw carriec by tie bracket, a rib carried by the jaW,a rotary KIRK SMITH cutter associated with the hopper, a tray Witnesses:
