DORA ADOOIA GRA-NT,` OF'PATTEN, MAINE.
SALT-SHAKER..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,516, dated August 2, 1898.
Application iled December 31,1897. Serial No. 664,876. (No model.)
To all whom it `may concern:
Be it known-that I, DORA ADooIA GRANT, a citizen of the Unitedv States, residing at Patten, in thecounty of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Salt-Shaker, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in salt-shakers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of salt-shakers and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and ornamental device adapted to be readily applied to asalt-shaker and capable of agitating the contents thereof and prevent the salt from caking. Y l
A further object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be positively operated from Vthe exterior of a salt-shaker, so that the contents thereof may be stirred or partially pulverized without removing the top of the shaker.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a salt-shaker constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the agitator or lever.
Like numerals of referencedesignate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a salt-shaker provided with a screw-cap 2, having the usual perforations 3 for the discharge of salt, and the said cap or top is provided with a central projection or lug 4, extending from its upper face and forming a fulcrum for an agitator or lever 5. The agitator or lever 5', which is provided at its top with an ornamental handle, is composed of two sides', connected at their upper terminals by the handle portion of the lever and straddling the projection or lug 4. The projection or' lug 4 is perforated to receive a pivot-pin 7, which also passes through perforated enlargements 8 of the sides 6 of the agitator orlever `5, and the said sidesV pass through openings Stof the screw top/or capv and extend to within a short distance of the bottom of the receptacle.
The handle of the lever or agitator does not interfere with the free use of the saltshaker, and it may be readily grasped to agitate or break up any caking of the contents of the salt-shaker without removing the screw top or cap. Y
The sides 6 of the lever or agitator preferably consist of round rods or stems, and the receptacle or body of the salt-shakerk may be of any desired configuration or ornamenta- ,ing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of a salt-shaker provided at its top with a projection or lug and having an opening, and an agitator positively pivoted to the projection or lug and carried by the cover, said agitator consisting of a lever extending through the opening of the cover, the upper portion of the lever constituting a handle and adapted to be oscillated, and the lower portion bein g arranged to swing through the contents of the salt-shaker, substantially as described.
2; The combination of a salt-shaker provided at its top with a lug or projection and having openings at the opposite sides of the same, and an agitator consisting of a lever provided at the top with a handle and having sides or stems straddling the lug or projection, pivoted to the same and extending through the openings into the salt-shaker, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DORA ADOOIA GRANT.
Witnesses:
