TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEP HAS MANNING, of West Albany, in the county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful mode of Tempering Steel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same.
I take linseed oil (raw or boiled) of any desirable quantity, placed in a vessel to submerge Whatever article is to be tempered, and add to it as much common salt as the oil will take up; and, for the purpose of combining the salt with the oil, the salt should be finely pulverized, and added to the oil in the vessel aforesaid, and stirred suflieiently to produce the most complete practicable combination. For ear or large wagon-springs, the vessel'should be of -length, Width, and depth sufiicient to allow of subnierging the spring, or an article of much length, edgewise, as it. would be less liable to spring than it would be by submerging the article lengthwise. The advantage of using this combination of linseed oil and salt is, that the steel is less liable to crack in tempering, and it produces a better and tougher spring than the usual mode of tempering in other oils, or anything h tofore used; and for most kinds of steel, when tempered by this mode, it is not necessary to draw the temper. The heating and drawing of the temper (in those kinds where drawing the temper is necessary) are done as in the old and usual way of doing them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of the combination of linseed oil (raw or boiled) with as much common salt as the oil will take up, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
GEPHAS MANNING.
