Description
J.F.DUBBER. MANUFACTURE OF SPRINGS.

IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF SPRINGS.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM. IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. F. DUBBER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin the Manufacture of Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of this invention.
Figiire 2 is a transverse section of this invention, the line a: 2:, fig. 1, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in-the employment or use of a former of suitable shape, for the purpose of drawing the temper of a spring after the same has been hardened, and of bending the spring while it passes from the hardened to the tempered state, in such a manner that said spring can be brought to the desired form or shape while being tempered, and the tedious operation of setting the spring after the temper has been drawn is avoided.
A represents a former, made of cast iron or other suitable material, which can be heated to such a temperature that it will draw the temper of a steel spring. The spring, B, is first brought in the desired form or shape, and it is then hardened by heating it and dipping in oil or other liquid. By this operation the spring loses its shape, and the operation of bringing it back to its proper shape, or of setting the same, is generally performed after the temper has been drawn, and in most cases this operation requires great skill and much time. i
By my invention the operation of setting the spring is rendered simple and easy. I heat the former, A, to such a temperature that it is capable of drawing the temper, and then I adjust the springon the same, and while the temper is being drawn I am able to bend the spring to the required shape. It is remarkable that the operation of bending the spring is feasible only at that moment when the same passes from the hard to the tempered state, for after the temper has been drawn the spring cannot be bent, or if bent, it returns to its shape. But at the moment where the change takes place the spring can be bent, and it will stay in'ithe form to which it is brought. If the right moment is watched, all danger of breaking the spring, is avoided. By these means the manufacture of springs of various forms or shapes is considerablyfacilitated, and many springs"which heretoi'ore have been manufactured with great difficulty can now be made with the greatest ease.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim tempering steel springs, and adjusting their shape by means of the former herein described, and in the manner set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 9th day. of May, 1866 J. F. DUBBER.
