Box-FAST'ENER,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,919, dated June 21, 1898.
Application filed May 2 5, 1 8 9 '7.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs E. SAYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Janes-- ville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Box- Fastener, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to' improvements in box-fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of box-fasteners and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to be readily applied to boxcovers and capable of securely fastening the same to the bodies of boxes and of preventing their removal without a key. Y
The invention' consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
'In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a box-cover provided with a fastener constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 isa vertical sectional view of the upper portion of a box, showing the invention applied. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the central portion of the box-fastener, the key being in position. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the rotary hub. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the casing.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in allthe figures of the drawings.
l designates a cover designed especially for beer-boxes, but adapted for any analogous receptacle, and provided on its lower face with a depending flange 2, preferably formed by cleats or strips and fitting within the body 3 of the box, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The cover is provided with a central circular opening 4, in which is arranged an annular flange or sleeve 5 of a hub 6, which consists of a plate or disk arranged on the inner face of the cover and the said sleeve or flange, which extends into the circular opening and forms a journal.
The sleeve or flange of the hub has its upper edge located slightly below the plane of the upper face of the cover, and the hub is Serial No. 638.133. (No model.)
provided with a central opening or socket 7, vadapted to be engaged bya key Sand receiving a'central stud 9 of a casing 10.
The easing 10 is provided with substantially L-shaped feet 11, which are perforated for the reception of screws or othervsuitable fastening devices and which offset the body portion of the casing from the cover. The body portion of the casing is circular and the feet, which are arranged at intervals, form openings through which extend the inner portions of sliding bolts ll,
The sliding bolts ll, which consist of rods, have their outer ends l2, which are pointed, guided in perforations 13 of the flange of the cover, and the inner ends of the bolts are bent upward at right angles and are engaged with perforations 14 of the hub, whereby when the latter is partially rotated the bolts are simultaneously reciprocated. The pointed ends of the bolts are adapted to engage the -sides and ends of a box which does not have to be provided with any particular form of keeper, and when the inner ends of the bolts are brought in alinement with their outer ends and are arranged directly opposite each other they are positively held against accidental inward movement.
It will be seen that the box-fastener is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that the casing secures the hub to the cover and supports and forms a bearing for the same, and that the bolts cannot be operated without a key. It will also be apparent that the box-fastener is quickly operated to lock or'release a cover and that a keeper is unnecessary, the pointed ends of the bolts being adapted to embed themselves in Vany ordinary wooden box.
Vhat l claim isv l. In a box-fastener, the combination with a cover having a central opening, of arotary hub provided with a central opening and having an annular iange or sleeve fitting in the opening of the cover, said hub being adapted to be engaged by a key, a casing secured to the cover, receiving the hub and provided with a stud fitting in the central opening of the same and forming a pivot said casing being provided with a-series of openings, and
vIOO
sliding bolts guided on the cover and having i their inner portions extended through the openings of the casing and connected with the hub, substantially as described.
2. In a box-fastener, the combination with a cover provided with a depen din g flange having perforatons, a easing provided with a` central vertical pivot-stnd and having feet forming openings and secured to the cover, a hub provided with an annular sleeve or flan ge and having a central opening to receive the pivot-study and provided with perforations, said hub being journaled on the stud
