I E. KUBASOH.
AUTOMATIC WINDOW CLOSER.
Patented June 14, 1898.
UNITED STATES;
PAT NT OFFICE.
EMIL KUBASCH, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY.
AUTO MAT IC WINDOW-CLOSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,642, dated June 14, 1898.
Application filed February 25, 1898. Serial No. 671,592. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, EMIL KUBASCH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Window- Closers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a window-closer which when a strong wind or storm comes up will automatically close any window left open to which it is attached to prevent damage by drafts or strong currents of air entering the room or interior to which the'window belongs. For this purpose preferably in one or both upper corners of the window a fan or a fan-wheel of any number of wings or vanes is arranged which, when set in motion performs the closing of the window.
A special form of construction embodying the principle of the invention and applied to a window with swinging sashes of the kind usual in most European countries is shown in Figure 1 whereas Fig. 2 shows the construction modified for application to a window with sliding sashes, as usual in America and England.
Referring now to Fig. l, in an upper corner of the Window-casing c is arranged a revolving shaft 1), suitably journaled at d, e, and f, as illustrated, and bearing on its outer end a fan -wheel a, of any preferred number of wings. On the inner end of said shaft is mounted a grooved wheel or drum g, to which is affixed the end of a rope or chain h. The latter is shown extending downward and passing over a. guide-pulley k on the inner side of the side piece 1' of'the framing, then extending through an aperture in the latter to the outside of the same and passing over a guide -pulley Z, thereupon again extending downward and over a guide-pulley m, after which it is conducted laterally and over a pulley n, supported by the cross-bar 0, and fastened to an eyelet q of .the swinging sash p.
The drum 9 instead of being on the inner end of the shaft 17 might be placed on the mid dle portion or outer endof the same, as might also the pulleys be removed from the outside to the inside ofthe window, the exact arrangement of all the details being as preferred in any particular case.
It will easily be understood how rotation of the fan in any direction will cause the window-sash to move from an open to a closed position. In order now to prevent a feeble wind or breeze from closing the window, a brake is applied to the shaft 1), preferably adjustable and of any desired construction. In the drawings a brake is shown composed of a lever r, fulcrumed'at one end to the wall or framing of the window, resting on and partially encompassing the shaft 1), and supporting at its other end a pendent rod 8, to which any number of weights t u, 1; may be applied to obtain the desired adjustment of the brake.
A catch or fastener may be provided to hold the sash in its closed position.
The form and construction of the vanes of the fan-wheel may be of any kind to fulfil their purpose. The fan-Wheel may also be provided with a casing directing the wind in a desired manner. For illustration, in Fig. 1 a very simple form of wheel has been chosen. y In the modifioation shown in Fig. 2 the drum 9 is assumed inclosed within a cavity of the wall. The. rope h is passed over but one guide-pulley w and then fastened to the sliding sash as, so that when the fan on shaft 7) is rotated in either direction this sash will be raised and the window closed.
What I now claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a window, anautomatic device for closing the same on the arising of a wind comprising a wind-wheel and operating connections therefrom to the window-sash whereby the movement of the windwheel effects the closing of the window, sub stantially as described. I
2. In combination, with a window, a'windwheel, a drum carried by the shaft thereof, a cord adapted to be wound on said drum and operatively connected with the window-sash, and a brake to prevent the'too free movement of said wind-wheel, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
