WITN ESSES flmdim ATTORNEYS m: smgwmc coyudrmmimssnu P'ARK ruczmx UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRYP. MOFFETT AND NORMAN O. MOFFETT, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-STOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,937, dated November 17, 1874; application filed loctober 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY P. MOFFETT, and NORMAN (J. MOFFETT, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque' and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Blind-Slat Operators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a front elevation, part sectional, of our blindslat operator; and Fig. 2 is a transverse ver tical sectional view of-the same.
This invention has relation to means for operating Venetian-blind slats, so as to admit a greater or less degree of light, according to the wants of the occupant of the room, without throwing up the sash.
The object of the invention is not only to providemeansfor opening or shutting the slats, and to adapt the degreeof light to the wants of the occupant of aroom, but also to preserve this adjustment when it has been obtained,
and to this end the nature of the invention consists in combining, with a semicircular plate having a number of perforations circularly arranged near'the edges thereof, a crankarm for opening and shutting the slats, the crank-shaft being endwise movable, and the crank-arm end made tapering, whereby the slats maybe opened more or less, and the requisite adjustment obtained and maintained, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a Venetian blind, the slats a of which are connected by a strip, B, so that all the said slats will open or close together. I) designates a rod, which is pivoted in any suitable manner to the lower end of the strip B, and is looped at its lower end to receive the tapering end 0 of a crank-arm, O, of which the shaft 0 has its bearings upon the window-sill D, passing.
through the sill-piece D into the interior of the apartment. The shaft 0 is made endwise movable in its bearings, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear, and is terminated by F designates when the slats are open a movement to the right or left will have the effect of closing the said slats, the closing being more or less pronounced, according to the degree of revolution imparted to the shaft 0.
Whenthe requisite degree of openness of the said slats has been obtained, admitting a certain degree of light, they may be held at this adjustment by thrusting the tapering end 0 of crank-arm G into one of the perforations f of plate F, as shown in Fig. 2.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the pitman b and the endwise-movable crank-arm shaft (3, of the plate F, having perforations f, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY P. MOFFETT.
NORMAN U. MOFFETT. Witnesses:
