WWA 2W0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT FARIES, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-BALANCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,289, dated December 9, 1873; application filed April 19, 1873.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT FARIES, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Sash-Balances, of which the following is a specification 7 My invention relates to balancing windowsashes; and consists in the combination, with a volute spring, a fusee, and a cord, of a swingin g pulley, in such a manner that the vibration of the pulley enables the cord to run properly on the pulley, and wind correctly on the fusee, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l of the drawings is a front elevation of a window-frame and sashes with my invention attached. Fig. 2 is to a scale twice as large as Fig. l, and is a cross-section of the same, showing all of those parts which are above the dotted line L L.
Like letters of reference denote like parts.
A is the window-frame; B, the lower, and B the upper, sash. D is a plate attached to the top rail of sash B, from which plate projects a spindle, h, on which a fusee, G, revolves, and to which one end of a volute spring, I, is attached, the other end being attached to the fusee. The latter being made hollow, the larger end forms the springbarrel. M is an L-shaped piece of metal attached to the top of the window-frame, to which is pivoted a crotch, e, at ff, by which means the latter, supporting the pulley E, has free lateral motion. It is so attached that the center of the pulley is in line with the center of the width of the sashes. F is a cord, one end of which is attached to the top rail of the lower sash at b. The other end, after passing over the pulley, is attached to the larger end of the fusee, on which it winds, the latter receiving motion by the action of the volute spring whenever either of the sashes is being raised, and by which means the sashes are balanced. The fusee and pulley are attached so that the cord runs nearly on a vertical line between them, the nearer the better, which is at right angles with the axis of the fusee and pulley, and parallel with that of the crotch supporting the pulley. The cord, approaching the pulley from the lower sash, also runs parallel with the axis of the crotch. The object of swinging the pulley, as above described, is that it may accom modate itself to the varying position of the cord onthe fusee as it winds on and off, to keep the cord always in the same relative position at right angles with the axis of the pulley and fusee, by which means it is insured to run properly on the former and wind correctly on the latter, even when the fusee is not grooved, but has only a straight ledge a little wider than the diameter of the cord parallel with its axis, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. G is a set-screw, which passes through a lug on plate D, and, when screwed up, engages with a catch, J, on the fusee, for the purpose of holding the volute spring wound up before and while the devices are being attached and arranged.
A fusce is used instead of a straight drum for the obvious purpose of compensating by leverage for the weakening of the volute spring by unwinding.
Instead of one set of the devices attached to the center of the window, as described, two may be used with advantage on large Windows-one on each side.
- The fusee and volute spring may be attached to the window-frame, they and the swinging pulley, however. remaining in the same relative position with each other, as described; but, in that case, only one sash can be balanced by one set of the devices; but, by attaching them to the sash,,as described, they operate to balance the two sashes.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the volute spring I, fusee C, and cord F, of the swinging pulley E, substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
ROBERT FARIES.
