l I I UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ANDREW B. TAET, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED DOUBLE HINGE AND SPRING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 6,052, dated January 23, 1849.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ANDREW B. TAFT, of the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the folf lowing is a Vfull and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a section of a double-jointed hinge on an open door, and of the casing to which it is attached by said double-jointed hinge. Fig 2 is a horizontal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is ahorizontal'section of the hinge on a closed door and casing, in which are shown a hinge, chain, and two springs.
This invention consists, principally, in the construction and application of a doublejointed hinge, which admits of the opening of the door and gate or other thing (requiring` to open both ways) in either direction, and in the combination of this peculiar hinge with two springs connected by a chain, whereby the door, gate, &c., is held close to the casing and also closes itself. Each hinge employed in this improvement Vmay consist of four pieces, two of whichA and B are side plates, with knuckles C C and DD attached thereto. The connecting-plates E and F have their knuckles Gr G connected to those of the attached. plates A B, and each connects the plates A B to each other, so that when the door or hinge H is opened in the opposite direction, K being the casing or postto which the made horizontally into the door and into the l casing, and into these holes are inserted spiral or other springs L L. A chain or other attachvment M passes through both springs, and the ends thereof are attached to the opposite ends l of the springs, which are thereby held in a position partly compressed, while the centerward ends' thereof press against two plates or collars W U, which are adjusted in the'holes for that purpose. Small guide-rollers S S are adjusted upon centers Within the apertures I J, and the chain passes between each pair n of rollers and (when the door is open) over the central knuckles, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. -The springs are required lto hold the .door in contactwith the casing and to close the door when opened in .either direction.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,.isv Double -jointed vhinges constructed substantially as herein described, in combination with a chain or cord and two springs arranged as herein setforth.
ANDREW B. TAFT.
