I y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.l
SARAH oAIN, or HUNTINGTON, wEsT vIReINIA.
uNDERsK/IRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,964, dated May 31, 1898.
Application iiled March 24, 1897. Serial No. 628 ,989. (No model.)V
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARAH GAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underskirts;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wearing-apparel, the obj ect of the same being to provide an underskirt which will improve Y the set of the overskirt and prevent the latter clinging to the lower limbs of the wearer when going against the wind, a usual occurrence with the ordinary skirts, offering an impediment to walking as well as causing embarrassment.
By the use of lny improved underskirt the front of the overskirt is reinforced or stiifened to such an extent that the objections heretofore existing are overcome andthe skirt is given a graceful set.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, Figure 'l is a plan view of my improved skirt. Fig. 2 is a sec-4 tional view on the line 2 of Fig. l.
My improved skirt is practically cut from a single piece, to the upper edge of which is stitched the band 1, adapted to hold the skirt in place by being passed around the waist of the wearer.
The forward part of the skirt is provided with an opening 2, and when applied the rear part of the skirt is open its full length, the' lower edges being preferably rounded, as shown. To the lower part of the front of they skirt is stitched a strip, a number of lines of; horizontal stitching 3 being made to form pockets 4, said pockets being adapted to receive Whalebones or other resilient stiffenin gstrips 5.
If desired, the skirt may be made with a lining, in which case the horizontal lines of stitching will form pockets, and the lining can be cut at one end of the rows of stitching to permit access to the pockets for placing the stiffening-pieces therein. After the stiffening-pieces have been inserted the opened end of the pockets may be closed by a vertical lineof stitching.
The skirt is provided at each end of the series of strips of resilient material with elastic gussets 6, which will allow the lower part of the front to give. This skirt may also be provided with pockets 7, which will provide for secreting valuables.
With a skirt constructed in accordance with my invention a better appearance is given the overskirt and the objectionable features hereinbefore noted are removed.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, isv An runderskirt having in thev front at the lower part thereof a series of parallel, horizontally-extendin g pockets or compartments,
strips of thin, flat, resilient material secured therein, and an elastic gusset at each end of said series of pockets, for the purpose and substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
