MEYER LANG, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec..*?, 1909.
Application filed August 7, 1909. Serial No. 511,765.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEYER LANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in garments and particularly underskirts or petticoats and has for an object the arrangement of a front placket in combination with a plait located at or near the back of the skirt provided with means for adjusting the size of the waist and the hip measurement without effecting the set of the skirt and which, when once adjusted, does not have to be disturbed in putting on or taking off the skirt. a
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the invention shown applied, the opening being shown unfastened for the purpose of illustration. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1, except the opening has been secured together. Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 2, except the rear plait has been drawn together. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail fragmentary sectional view approximately on line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the skirt body which may be an ordinary skirt, under skirt or petticoat as desired, though the invention is particularly adapted to petticoats. The skirt 1 is provided with an opening 2 at one side of the front of the skirt, the opening being arranged at the seam of the front gore. The sides 3 and 4. of opening 2 are provided with sockets 5 and studs 01' balls 6 respectively which present securing means for holding the flaps or sides 3 and 4 together. Hooks and eyes or other securing means may be substituted if desired. Also opening 2 may extend'any desired distance down and is preferably provided with reinforcing strips 7 and 8 for preventing the securing means from tearing the skirt. Arranged in the back of the skirt is a box plait 10 which is formed by folding the material of the garment to form meeting edges which give the appearance of an opening, as at 9. The skirt is cut and fitted to properly set with the sides of the plait in contact, but when it is desired to increase the size of the waist and to correspondingly increase the size of the hip measurement, the sides of the plait 10 are moved apart to the desired distance, and then held from further movement by lacing 11, which is tied, so as to hold the same in position. When the edges of the plait 10 have been moved apart said plait will be seen in a gathered condition, but the skirt will still remain properly fitted. The lacing 11 may be drawn or loosened as desired for varying the size of the Waist and the hip measurement, from the substantially full opening, as shown in Fig. 2, to a closed position, as shown in Fig. 4. After the skirt has been fitted and the lacing 11 drawn to the proper extent, the ends are tied, and then the lacing is not molested in applying or removing the garment, but the opening 2 is opened and closed as desired.
The vertical edges of the box plait 10 are formed by folding or forming a hem in the material which is held in position by means of stitching and by a series of eyelets through which the lacing 11 passes. In order to prevent any tearing of the garment a strip of some good quality material, as leather or kid, as 12, is placed between the edges of the material forming the edges of the box plait, and has passed thcrethrough the eyelets which carry the lacing 11. Arranged in the upper edge of the plait is a strip of leather or other reinforcing material through which are passed eyelets lt and 15 which carry the lacing 11 for properly preventing the box plait 10 against sagging or drawing down.
In the construction of a skirt embodying the invention as described the same is adapted to fit any woman at any time and for all occasions. The same is out upon practical lines, is very simple in construction, and all adjustment made in the back, the proper place for such adjustment. The skirt is also made to fit neatly around the Waist and hips Without any fullness in any of its ad justed positions, and Without puckering or gathering at an point.
It Will be observed that the lacings are made through folds in the skirt, and that the inverted box plait is a continuation of the skirt and preferably is not a separate or independent piece of material. The folds are lined between two thicknesses of the fabric With suitable material such as kid leather, or other good quality of leather, through which the eyelets carrying the lacings are passed, and secured in position in the usual manner.
What I claim is:
1. A skirt formed with an opening at or near the front, and having an inverted box plait in the back thereof, said plait formed to produce spaced edges giving the appearance of an opening, each of said edges being provided With a series of vertically arranged eyelet-s, and lacing passed through said eyelets and through the plait at or near .the upper edge thereof for preventing the said upper edge from sagging or dropping down.
2. A skirtforlned with an opening at or near the front, and having an inverted box plait in the back thereof, said plait formed to produce spaced edges giving the appearance of an opening, each of said edges being provided with a series of vertically arranged eyelets, lacing passed through said. eyelets and through the plait at or near the upper edge thereof for preventing the said upper edge from sagging or dropping down, and reinforcing material arranged along the side and upper edges of the plait through which the eyelets and lacing pass.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
