CHRISTIAN MARKER, OF'CRRY, PENNSYLVANIA.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,939, dated May 31, 1898. Application filed September 27, 1897. Serial No. 653 ,276. (No model.)
- yania, have invented certain new and useful yrrnprovements in Extension-Tables; and I do A. ereby declare the following to be a full, clear, Vmd exact description of the invention, such ,as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked i' thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in eX- tension-tables; and it'consists, substantially, in making the end sections of the table so that they can be depressed when the table is being closed and raised up level with the remainder of the table-top when the table is extended. The mechanism by which I accomplish this result is hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section, on the line a: in Fig. 3, of my improved extensiontable when extended to its full length, show ing one of the end sections of the table-top raised and the other lowered ready to be closed up. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal section, on the line y y in Fig. 3, of the extension-table closed up. on the line ,e e' inFig. `f2.
`In the construction of my improved eXtension-table thus illustrated, A is the central portion of the table-top,which is secured to a cross-piece B,which 'is secured to the central sections c c of the slides C, and to the under faces of these sections c c another transverse piece D, carrying the central leg D' of the table, is secured. The ends a a of the central section A have their under edges cut away, as illustrated in Fig. ,1, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The end sections E E of the table are constructed so that they slide in and out on tongues a ot'v on the edges of the central section A of the table-top, operating in grooves e e on the inner 'faces of the end sections E of the table. See Fig. 3.) Between the sides E' E of the end sections E E are secured Fig. 3 is a transverse 'section of the same cross-pieces F F, to which are secured short longitudinal pieces G G, to which are attached the legs G' G, supporting the end sections E E of the table. The end sections H H of the table-top are provided near their ends with longitudinal strips h, secured to the under surfaces thereof, and double hinges I I are secured to the under surfaces of the strips h and to the sides of the cross-pieces F F, forming the framework of the. end sections E of the table, and in the central part of the ends of the table there are spring-catches J .Ladapted to engage plates h' on the ends of the sections I-I H of the table-top when raised up, as illustrated in Fig.'1. When, however, the catches .I .I are released, the end sections spring toward the center of the table, the ends a o, of the central part, being cut away, so as to permit this movement, traveling inward and downward the length of the central. sections of the hinges I I, which brings the tops of the end sections H H of the top below the under surfaces of the central section A, as illustrated in Fig. l, so that they will pass under the central section of the top A when the table is closed up, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Handles K are also secured to the central portions of the under sides of the end sections H H for convenience in raising and lowering. these sections.
Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim asl new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
In an extension-table, the combination, with a stationary table-top section; of a slidable end section E, a depressible table-top section hinged to the said end section and provided with a downwardly-projecting plate at its outer end, anda slidable catch carried by the said end section and engaging with the said plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
