To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OSBORNE HOL- LANDJL citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor- Strops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to razor-strops.
The objects are to produce a razor-strop in which the stropping-surfaces will be held under requisite tension at all times without the employment of any means for stretching or tightening the same, such as usually employed, and in which the stropping surfaces will yield to the pressure of a razor uniformly and of the entire width, and thereby bring the strop into direct contact with the edge of the razor to produce a fine and smooth cutting edge.
With these objects in view the invention consists, broadly, in a razor-strop having a yielding metallic strop-supporting surface.
The invention consists, further, in a razorstrop provided with a yielding metallic stropsupporting surface and means for holding the said surface assembled with relation to the body of the strop.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated aform of embodiment of my invention, although it is to be understood that other forms of embodiment thereof may be employed without departing from the spirit of the same, and in the drawing the figure is a view, in side elevation, displaying a strop constructed in accordance with my invention.
In carrying my invention into effect I employ a back plate A, which may be of any suitable material, such as wood, indurated fiber, vulcanized fiber, or any other suitable substance possessing requisite rigidity and lightness. This back plate may be provided with a stropping-surface, such as leather or canvas, or, if preferred, a hone may be mount ed upon this plate.
The face plate A is constructed of a piece of thin sheet metal and may be secured to the back plate in any suitable manner, as by employing a block at each end of the body or by bending the face plate at right angles to itself and then again inward so as to form a flange by which the two plates may be assembled. Upon this face plate is secured a finishingstrop, such as fine leather, which in use will, by the yielding quality of the face plate, give to the pressure of the razor, and thereby bring its edge into direct contact with the leather to produce a fine and smooth cutting edge.
The handle A of the strop may be rigid with relation to the strop-body or have a pivoted and folding connection therewith, such as described in an application of mine filed of even date herewith and serially numbered 635,241.
The strop may be made in any shape and ornamented in any manner, and it may be constructed of any suitable material or materials best adapted for the purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A razor-strop comprising a handle, a rigid back plate secured to the handle and provided with a suitable stropping-surface, a resilient, metallic front plate secured at one end to the handle, and having its other end bent or curved to form a flange to be secured to the under side of the back plate, thereby leaving a clear space, practically the entire length of the body of the strop, in which to permit the front plate to yield, and a stropping-surfaoe secured to the resilient front plate, the inturned ends of the flange of the front plate being let into the back plate so as to lie flush with the same, thereby obviating the presentation of an obstruction, substantially as described.
