FREDERICK W. DRESSEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ELECTRIC HEADLIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,876, dated May 10, 1898.
Application filed c r 1 97. Serial No- 654=,209. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LFREDERICK W.DRESSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to theconstruction and arrangement of headlights employed upon electric surface cars, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap, and efiective headlight which is located entirely within or back'of the dashboard, obviating danger of breakage by contact with vehicles, 850., and which -may be readily cleaned, adjusted, and examined and any part of the headlight reached by the motorman Without leaving the platform of the car.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a viewin elevation of my improved headlight with the rear portion opened or thrown back. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view at line :20 so of Fig. 1, the rear portion being closed. 1
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
In the drawings, 1 is a ring, preferably made of cast metal. It will be observed that the ring 1 is made deeper at the bottom 2 than at the top 3. The object of this construction will be hereinafter explained.
4. is a horizontal bracket fixed at the bottom of the ring 1 for the reception and support of a lamp 5, the conductors 6 whereof pass through a perforation 7.
8 is a rabbet around the periphery of the ring 1. l
9 is a swinging securing and locking catch hinged to the ring 1 at 10.
11 is an inwardly-projecting flange, and 12 is an outwardly-projecting flange, arranged for bolting or securing to a dash 13, and 14. is a ring or washer for giving additional stiffness.
15 is the glass forming the front of the headlight. This glass rests against the flange l1 and is held in place by means of a wire ring 16, removably secured in position by means of screws or pins 17 ,which pass through the ring 1.
Hinged at 18 to the ring 1 is the back portion or body of the headlight, consisting of a casting 19, having a horizontal flange 20, arranged to fit snugly over the rabbet 8, and a bottom flange 21 for passing beneath the bracket 4:, effectually closing the headlight when the catch 9 is caused to enter the eye 22 and the thumb-nut 23 screwed home, preventing the admission of water, 850. I 24 is a reflector secured within the casting 19. By giving the ring 1 the peculiar shape shown when placed in position upon the dash and the parts are all assembled for use the reflector and back are given a forward inclination at the top, throwing the light downward as well as forward.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An electric headlight, in which are comprised a flanged ring for securing within a car-dash, said ring carrying the lamp-bracket and lamp; a glass secured within said ring, and the body of the headlight hinged to the fixed ring, and arranged to swinginward, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a headlight of the character herein specified, a ring secured within a car-dash, said ring beingwider at the bottom than at the top, in combination with the body of the headlight hinged to said ring, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a headlight of the character herein specified, a ring secured Within a car-dash,
said ring being Wider at the bottom than at the top, and having a rabbet at its inner edge, in combination with the body of the headlight hinged to the fixed ring, arranged to lap thereover and be held in place, substantially as shown and described.
FREDERICK W. DRESSEL.
