HEADLIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,875, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed February 27, 1896. Serial No. 580,953. (Nd model.)
To all whom. it may concern..-
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. MILLEN, a
York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to enable a headlight or lantern to be set into or through a'dashboard' or front part of a car; and the invention resides in the novel features of contion and claims and illustrated in the annexed. drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is a rear view of a lantern or headlight. Fig.. 2 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. 1.
The lantern comprises a frame or ring 1, having a reflector 2 and lamp 3. The bezel or frame 4, hinged or jointed to the lantern frame orring l, carries a glass 5, and this transparent door 4 5 can be opened or closed on its hinge 6 and secured by a fastening 7.

The headlight or lantern has its reflector 2 set into or through this recess or opening in the dashboard and is secured by bolts or fastenings to the lantern frame or ring 1, Which is attached by bolts 11 to the dashboard at points around the edge of the recess or opening 10. The braces or protector 12 have lips or flanges 13, which, when engaged by the bolts 11, secure the braces in place.
By setting the lantern into the dashboard the front of the lantern is brought into the plane of the dashboard or of the front face of the dashboard, and the lantern not projecting beyond or much beyond the front of the dashboard is guarded to a large extent against crushing or injury.
The braces 12 guard the lantern or reflector 2 against blows or injury from the rear.
The lamp 3 is shown as an electric or incandescent lamp, and the invention is serviceable on electric cars, as, for example, trolley=cars, but of course the invention is not limited to use in connection with cars or with electric lights, as it can be elsewhere applied, as, for example, in various vehicles.
By having the lantern detachably seated in the recess or dashboard said lantern can be readily removed for cleaning or repairs.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= 1. The combination of a car-dashboard having a circular opening near its center leaving the dashboard unbroken transversely both above and below said opening, with a headlight or lantern set bodily in said circular opening and attached to the dashboard at points around the edge of said opening, a reflector setting Within the circular opening, an d a protector arranged over the reflector and attached to the dashboard at points around the circular opening therein, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of a car-dashboard having an opening near its center leaving the dashboard unbroken transversely both above and below said opening, with a ring attached to the dashboard at points around the edge of said opening, a transparent door mounted on said ring, a reflector setting into the said opening and secured to said ring, and a protector arranged over the reflector and connected with the said ring and with the dashboard at points around the opening therein, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination of a car-dashboard hav ing a recess or opening therein, with a lantern frame or ring attached to the dashboard at points around the edge of the said recess or opening, a reflector setting within the said recess or opening and attached to the frame or ring, a protector arranged over the reflector and secured to the dashboard, and a transparent door mounted on said frame or ring, substantially as and for the purposes described.
