SPRING TOY.
JOHN H.` BROWN, Or NEW YORK,` N. Y. ,team Patent No. 60,336, .dated mamar 11, `1866.
@he Stlnhule rrltrnsbju in this rttrrs glzltrnt :mh making part tithe Smm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: V
Be it' known that I, JOHN H. Bnomnof 449 West street, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Spring Toy; and I do herebyldeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled inthe art to malte and use the same, Areference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents g sectionalside elevation Of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectionll plan or top viewr of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a spring toy, which is operated by means of a spiral or tension spring, in contra-4 distinction to the coiled springhereto'ore used. One end of this spiral spring is connected to a cord, which winds on a drum provided with a ratchet-wheel and pawl, in such a manner that by turning said drum the tension of the spring can be regulated at pleasure The opposite end of the spring connects to a lever,`which ris rigidly attached to the body of the horse, and which is provided with two or more holesl to receive the spring in such a manner that, by changing the point o' connection between ,said spring and lever, theleverage of the spring can l be accommodated to the greater or smaller weight of the child occupying the toy. By,the use of the said lever the hind legs are relieved from all strain, and a strong and durable toy is obtained.
A represents a horse or other toy figure, made of wood or any other suitable material; or, instead of a horse or other animal, a simple carriage may be used. This toy is supported ouapivot, a, which passes through its hind part, and which has its bearings in two standards, b', rising from the frame, B. O is a lever, which is rigidly secured to the hind part of the toy, Vand the lower end of which connectswith a spring, D, which may be made of wirc in the form of a spiral spring, or, instead thereof, a plain strip of India rubber,;or other elastic material, may be used. One end of this spring is connected to the lever, O, and its other end to a cord, h, which winds on a drum, b, the axle of which has its bearings inthe side pieces of the frame, B.. Said drum is provided with one or more ratchet-wheels, c, and pawls, d, secured to the frame, B, engage with the teeth of each ratchetwheel. ByV turning the drum in the direction of the arrow marked on it in 5g. 1, vthe oordwinds up thereon, and the tension of the spring is increased; and by throwing. the pawls, d, back out of gear with the ratchet wheels, the drum is permitted to turn back, and the tension of the spring is decreased. The lever,` C, is` provided with several holes, e, to receive the spring, D, so that the leverage can be` accommodated to the weight'of' the child occupying the toy. By the use of the lever the hind legs of the horse or other animalfif the toy represents such) are relieved of all strains, and the durability of the toy is materially increased. The spring D is cheap, easily made, readily applied and regulated, and if it looses its tension it can be replaced at a com- -parative'ly triflin g expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and dsire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The lever C, spring D, and regulating drum b, in combination with the toy A, constructed and operating i substantially as and for the purpose set forth. V
2. Graduating the lever C sothat the leverage of the spring can be accommodated to the weight of the child occupying the toy, i p i 3. Supporting the toy on a fulcrum, a, at its back end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
i JOHN H. BROWN.
