SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,252, dated May 3, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, H NRY S. BRIGGs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wash-board-Fasteners, of

j which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in washboard-fasteners,and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device which may be attached to a washtub of any design, and thereafter so secure the washboard relative to the tub in which it is being used as to prevent said board from riding upward. I

With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and com bination of elements hereinafter set forth,and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the-same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view representing justment upon said rod.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied I provide a rod A, the ends of which are secured in any suitable manner within Gby a pin H, passing through two ears formed thereon, all of which is shown in Fig. 2.

The clamp Gr may be made of drop-forging or other suitable material, and is so designed as to give it considerable strength in proporthat the Washboard may be placed within a tub and the clamp-head adjusted upon the rod so as to bring the clamp in proper relative position to the edge of the tub over which it is placed and secured by the proper manipulation of the clamp-screw I, after which the thumb-screw E may be caused to bind the head in position upon the rod A, from which it will be seen that the washboard cannot ride upward nor be otherwise accidentally displaced relative to the tub; but should at any time it become necessary or desirable to swing the washboard sidewise for gaining access to articles therebeneath this is readily accomplished by the joint formed by the pivot-pin H and the joint formed by the swiveling of the spindle within the head, thus giving the user of the board as free access to the tub and the contents thereof as could be had were my attachment not used. Another object of the compound joint between the head and the clamp is to permit the use of the clamp upon either side of the board or to permit the reversal of the board when it is desired to use one side instead of the other, which is easily accomplished by this means.

Much of the inconvenience which has heretofore been occasioned by the displacement of a washboard by its tendency to ride upward is overcome by my improvement without in any way'interfering with the proper operations of the board, and it is further to be noted that no liability exists of catching or tearing the articles being washed upon the board.

In practice it has been found that a single clamp is sufficient to hold a board for ordinary. purposes in proper place; but, if desired, tWo of these clamps may be used, one upon each side of the board; but the last-named arrangement would have the disadvantage of preventing the'free swinging of the board sidewise when access to articles therebeneath is desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. In combination with a rod, ahead having a longitudinal passage formed therethrough said passage being formed in two sizes whereby a shoulder is produced, a spindle having a head formed thereon, said spindle having its body fitted in the small-sized portion of the passage and the head fitted against the shoulder a U-shaped clamp pivoted on the outer end of the spindle, said head having a second passage formed therethrough at right angles to the first and run through the largesized portion thereof, said rod being passed through the last-named passage, as and for the purpose described.
