` SAMUEL W. VALENTINE, OF BRISTOL, N EOTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 60,288, dated December 4, 1866.
SPECIF'ICATION.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. VALENTINE, of Bristol, of the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have made a new and useful invention or Cachet, having reference to the scaling of trunks or packages; and do hereby declare the same to bc fully described in the following speeication, and ,represented in` the accompanying drawings.
In earryingout my invention I' employ a strap of leather, or other suitable material, Vwhich is shown at A, in the said drawings, such strap, at or near one end of it, being securely fastened tothe lid or other proper part of the trunk, bag,-orparcel to he sealed. The said strap is'next to be run through a loop, B, properly secured to the body or other suitable part of the trunk, bag, or parcel, the whole being so that the two parts tom'hich the said strip and loop are attached, cannot be opened or drawn apart without the strap being extracted from the loop. A small rivet fmmetallie eyelet, C, is next to be inserted through the loop'and Lthe strap, and clinched or set down thereupon by a punch or other suitable means. Instead of arranging the eyelct in the loop and the strap in manner as represented in fig. 1, there may be another strap, D, ailixed to the body of the trunk, and to lap on or under the strap A, in which case thc eyclct may be inserted in the' two straps, the same being as exhibited in lig. 2. The trunk or package cannot, therefore, be opened without either cutting one of the straps or the l'oop, or disarranging the eyelet, which, when donc, will be proof that it has been effected designedly.
By my invention the contents of the trunk or package will be so scaled that they cannot bctamp'ered with while the said trunk or package may be in store or in transita.
Figures 4 and represent the application of the invention, as shown in igs. 1 and 2, to a trunk or box, d, in such figures exhibiting the lid, and e the-body of such article.
I do not restrict my invention to the particular form or forms in which it is represented.
I malte no claimto sealing a trunk or parcel by bending a cord around it and scaling or plumbing" such` cord by a clasp or button of lead pressed upon it. Nor do I claim the employment of an eyelet or a rivet for connecting two pieces ot' any material together; but what I do claim as my invention or new or improved n lanufacture, is a trunk as made with a sealing strap, A, and loop, B, to be combined or connected by` aneyelet, 0,'
or a rivet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
, SAML. W. VALENTINE.
