TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB F. Gontran, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Machine for Ornamenting Mouldings; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in -the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention,

This invention relates to a machine in which elastic dies are used for the purpose of printing designs on mouldings. These dies are made in the form of rollers, composed of some elastic material, and from their surfaces project the designs to be transferred to the mouldings. The mouldings are carried" through under a suitable pattern roller or die, which, being supplied with gum or other stickymaterial, or ink,produces on the surface of the moulding the required designs, andby applying gold orsilver leaf or bronze powder, theelect of these i designs can be increased, and ornamented mouldings in great variety can be produced with comparatively little expense.

A represents a bed made of iron, or other. suitable material, and supported by legs B. On this bed are secured two strips, C C', of brass or other suitablematerial, and one or both of these strips are adjustable, so that the distance between their inner edges can be accommodated to Vvmouldiugs of different size and shape. After said guide strips have been adjusted tocorrespond to mouldings of a certain size, one moulding after the other is passed through between them by the action of a feed-wheel a, which is mounted on a` vertical shaft b. This shaft has its bearings in the bed A, and in a hanger c, secured to the under surface of the bed, and on its lower end is mounted a bevel-wheel d, which gears in' a corresponding bevel-wheel e, mounted on the driving shaft, f. To this shaft, motion is imparted by hand or other suitable power. The pattern roller, or ldie D,'is mounted on a shaft g', whichY has its bearings in two arms h, suspendedfrom a rod z', which is secured in lugs projecting from the outer surface of `a plate E; said arms swing freely up and dow'n, and springs. j holdthe die down upon the surface of the moulding which is to be ornamented. The surface of the die is formed tocorrespend to the surface of the monldings, and it is' provided with ink or gum by means `of an additional roller` F, which is hung inswivel arms, k, and depressed on the pattern roller by springs l. The pins which form the bearings for the arms h and k, are removable, sp that the rollers can be readily taken out and replaced by others of diiferent shape. `The plate E, which supports the rollers D and F, is secured by a screw m, to a carriage G, which moves on a slide H, secured to uprights I, which rise from the bed A. A screw n, serves ,to adjust the carriage G on the slide, and said slide itself is adjustable 11p-and down on the uprights I, by means, of a screw. 0, which passes down through a cross-bar secured between the upper ends of the standards or nprights I. screw clamp p, consisting of a cross-bar and thumb-screw, serves to secure the slide H in its position on the uprights I. The roller or die D, is made of a composition of glue and lime, or some other elasticmaterial, so that the same will readily accommodate itself to the surface of the moulding to be ornamented. By the screw 0, the pattern roller or die can be depressed on the surface of the moulding, and as said moulding is fed along by the action of the feed-wheel a, the designs which are or may be-marked on said roller are transferred to the moulding. If simple gum or othersticking .material is used in printing, the marks produced on the surface of the moulding have to be covered with gold leaf, silver leaf, or some other suitable material, but in some cases the designs or ornaments can be transferred to the mouldings in such colors that no further finish Vis required.
