MACHINE FOR EMBOSSiNG ORNAMENTAL DESIGNS ON WOOD OR OTHER MATERIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4418, 186, dated March 17, 1891.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK Ii. HAW- KINS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 550 East One hundred and fortythird street, city of New York, and county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines to Emboss Ornamental Designs or Irregular- Shaped Articles of Wood or other Material, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore in machinesconstructed for the purpose of ornamenting wood or other compressible material by means of passing the same between rotating dies and feed-rollers, no provision has been made whereby any article of an irregular shape, such as brackets, can be ornamented.

At the rear side of the machine a suitable train of gearwvheels is attached to actuate the bed and the dies. A standard a, arm n, and hanging arm n serve to guide and carry the parts actuating the arm g in suitable bearings 0 0. Connected to the standard a and hanging arm n is fastened a rotating shaft 0, having pinions o meshing into the gearing formed on the edge of the wheels h h. At one end of the shaft 0' is fastened the hand wheel 0 The object of this handwheel is to raise the free end of the arm g, as may be desired.
The gearing to operate the dies, &c., consists of the driving-pulleysp p p and the pint-he intermediate gear-wheels s s .5 The die and feed-rolls are actuated by means of the gear-wheels s and s". In many cases better re sults can be obtained it the feed-roller and the die are not geared to work together, in which case either of the intermediate gearwheels can be removed.
To ope 'ate the machine the die is first fixed to the shaft so as to bring the pattern to the right place on the article to be ornamented. The article is then fixed in place on the bed b and the guides m m placed on each side, (if required.) The machine being new set in motion, the bed 7) carries the article under the revolving die. The guides at m first coming in contact with the face of the die near the ends raise the die sufficiently to allow that part of the article that is not to be ornamented to pass clear of the die, all other parts being embossed as the die is forced into the article by means of the mechanism connected to the lever 7t and weight 73. The article can be passed back and forth under the die till the desired effect is obtained. In all articles that require elaborate ornamentation they should be fastened to the sliding bedb and passed several times back and forth under the die.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sliding or movable frame adapted to support stock, having vertical guards, in combination with a vertically-niovable engravingdie limited in its downward movements by 1 said guards, substantially as specified.
2. In a machine for ornamenting wood and other material, the combination, with a sliding frame having teeth on its under side and vertically-disposed guards on its upper side, of a vertically-yielding engraving-roll limited in its downward movement by said guard, and one or more pinions on a shaft for moving the rack and its frame. substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the main frame, of the rack-frame having vertically-disposed guards on its upper side, the clamps also on the upper side, the angular piece arranged between the clamps, the feed-roller below the movable frame, the pinions on the shaft of said roller for moving the rack and its frame, and suitable means for rotating said shaft, substantially as specified.
4,. A machine for ornamenting wood and other material, having a vertically-adj ustable engraving-die rotated by gearing, a movable stock-table also operated by gearing and having vertical guard-flanges, an inclined bearing-block on its face, clamps for confining; stock on said bearing-block, tension devices connected with the movable engraving-die to hold the same depressed, and mechanical means for simultaneously raising the engraving-die and relieving the tension devices from said die, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the main frame, of the standard rising therefrom and having the horizontal branch and also the hanger formed thereon, a shaft journaled in said standard and carrying one or more gearwheels, a horizontal shaft having a pinion engaging said gears, a hand-wheel on the pinionshaft, a vertically-movable engraving-die,
arms connecting the die with said gears, an arm fixed to one end of the gear-shaft, a weighted lever pivoted to the main frame, and
' an arm connecting the arm of the weighted lever with the arm secured to said gear-shaft, substantially as specified.
6. A machine for ornamenting wood and other material, having a movable stock frame or table, an an ular bed-piece secured thereto, a vertically-movable engraving-die, gearing for rotating the die, gearing for raising and lowering said die, and a tension device connected with the latter-named gearing, sub stantially as specified.
7.
