IMPROVEMENT IN RnvoLvINe I'LUB-cLnANnN.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, G. E. BINGHAM, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State ofA Wisconsin have invented a new and useful Improvement in Revolving Flute-Cleaner; and I do hereby decfa're `that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled `in the'I-artto make andl use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which` l Figure I is a perspective view of my improved flue-cleaner. i Figure 2 is a side view of the same, the-detachable bars being removed.
i Figure 3 is an end viewof the same. I
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken th'rough the line :e z, igaZ. Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view ofthe same, taken through the line yy, iig. `3. 1 Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for cleaning lime scale, 85e., from boiler ilues; and it consists in the revolving iluelcleaner, formed by combining the woodenhars, metallic heads, binding bands, binding rods, and shaft with each other, as hereinafter` more fully described J are the standards, upon the upper ends of which are formed the bearings forthe journals 'of theshaft I, f as shown in gs. 2 and 3. E are metallidheads securely attached to thg shaft I, so as to revolvewith it.` The i heads E are made with inwardly projecting anges D for the ends of thebars and Aptorest upon, as shown in figs. 2 and 5. F are wooden bars, the ends of which reist upon the anges D, formed upon the inner side of the heads E, and they are secured in place by the binding bands C and B. The bars are made a. little shorter than the bars F, so that they may be removed and inserted without removing the bands C. To enable this to be done, the portion b', of the bands B, that cover the bars, is hinged Yto the main parts of said bands, as shown in gs. 1, 2, and 4. The ends of the bands and C are secured to each other bybein'g bent outwardjand having a bolt passed through them, as shown in the drawings. G are the binding rods which pass through ears formed upon the edges of the heads E, and they are held in place and tightened by nuts screwed upon their ends upon each side of the said ears, as shown in the drawings. L is an open springsriug, placed within the cylinder to support the middle parts of the bars F and A, as shown in figs. 2 and 5. H is a loose pulley, and K is a driving pulley, which areattached to one of the ends of the shaft I in the ordinary manner. In `using the apparatus, the hinged parts b' of the bands B are turned back,`and the bars A removed.` The lues to be t cleaned are then placed in the interior of the machine, together with a quantity of iron `turnings, or other suitable hard substance. Y The lues and iron turnings are then wet with water, and the machine closed and set in motion. The lime or other incrustation, as it is ground from the dues, escapes from the machine through the spaces between the barsA F and A. The machine must be stopped, and the progress `of the work examined i every few hours, so that the lues and iron turnings may be kept wet orV moist. In. thisV wayrwith a cylinder two feet in diameter, from twenty to thirty ues can be cleaned at a.' time, and even i a' greater number, when Vthe cylinder is made larger, thereby greatly diminishing the time and expense of cleaning a set of boiler ues.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The revolving flue-cleaner, formed by the combination and arrangement of the'heads E, woodenbars F and A, binding bands B and C, binding rods G, and shaft I, substantially as hereindescribed, and for Vthe purposes set forth. p
. G. E. BINGHAM.
