physborough, in the county ofJackson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany-- ing drawings.

This invention relates'to measuring devices, and more particularly to a lineal measure arranged to compute the cost of a quantity of the article for sale.

The invention has for its object to provide such a measure having a series of price-sheets so arranged that any one of the same may be brought into use, so as to compute the cost of the goods sold as the measuring operationis performed; p P It has fora further object to arrange the sheets in book form, so that the same can be conveniently applied to a counter and. the dry goods or other articles measured held Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention applied to the edge of a counter. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device, the top cover open; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the counter with my device applied thereto.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughoutthe several figures of the draw- The letter A designates a book composed of a seriesof price-sheets bound together and provided with a protecting-cover A. These sheets may be of any desired quality of paper found preferable in use,or a suitable cloth 1 fabric, and may be formed of any desired length. In the form of the invention illustrated in this case the sheets A are one yard in length and, as shown inFig. 1, are divided by a series of vertical lines A into the fractional parts of a yard or other unit of lineal measurement. Extending longitudinally of the sheet is a series of lines A to guide the operator in the use of the device. Adjacent to each of the vertical lines A is arranged a series of price-computing numerals a, reading from right to left, to indicate the price to be charged for the quantity of goods measured, while upon the back of the preceding sheet or page a reversely-arranged pricenumeral a/is placed to indicate that the opposite page is for computing the cost of goods similar. tacks a so that the pages may be opened into a flat position and the one in use brought adjacent to the inside of the counter, where the salesman can readily place the goods upon the same for measurement. At opposite ends of the book are arranged vertical guard-strips B, which in the present instance are one yard apart and are secured to the counter by fastening means b, so that the goods to be measured may be extended or stretched from one guard to the other and the edges of the price-sheet thereby protected against injury from contact with the goods. It has also been found desirable to secure a series of strips 0 to the counter to prevent the bolt of cloth or main body of the material being measured from coming into contact with the edges of the sheets so as to injure the same.- The edges of the sheets composing the book are indexed, as at A so that the salesman can readily refer to the sheet for computing the for the goods. Referring now to the method of using the invention, it will be observed that the book,

to left upon the first longitudinal line of numerals, then a second yard upon the second line of numerals, and three-fourths of a yard upon the third line of numerals. At that point he will find the cost price of eleven cents. As each successive yard is measured the salesman will move the edge of the goods slightly downward to correspond with the next line of numerals. The lines A may extend beneath each line of numerals, but for the purpose of clearness of illustration have been omitted from some of the lines of numerals. Each page is arranged to measure ten yards of goods and to compute the price of anyless number of yards or fractions thereof. The invention is also adapted to sell goods by lineal measure for a stated price. For instance, if a purchaser desired twentyfive cents worth of cloth at four cents per yard the salesman would continue to measure the cloth until he reached the mark indicating twenty-five cents, which in the present instance would be six and one-fourth yards. Other arrangements of matter may be placed upon the several price-sheets to compute the price for lineal measurement in any desired manner and the sheets may be bound or secured together and to the counter in any preferred manner or used Without attachment to a counter. It is also obvious that the guards at the opposite sides of the book may be omitted and other changes in construction and configuration of the same made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A measuring device comprising a book having cover-leaves adapted to be secured to a support, and a series of superposed sheets each having thereon longitudinally parallel indications for lineal measurement and for successively computing the prices of units and multiples of the length of said measuring device; substantially as specified.

2. A measuring device comprising a book having cover-sheets adapted to be secured to a support, and a series of price-sheets having upon one face indications for lineal measurement and upon the reverse face with price-numerals upon each sheet preceding the one having said computations thereon; substantially as specified.

3. In a measuring device, a series of sheets secured together and provided with indications corresponding with units of lineal measurement and for computing the cost thereof, a cover secured to said sheets, and guards secured to a support at opposite ends of the sheets, substantially as specified.

4. In a measuring device, a series of pricesheets having thereon indications for lineal measurement and for computing the prices of units of said measurement, said sheets being provided with indexed edges, and pricenumerals arranged upon the back of each sheet preceding the one having said price computation thereon, substantially as specified.
