UNITED STATESy PATENT OEEICE.
EDIVARD T. BUTLER, OF DELLEFONTAINE, OI'IIO.
CLOTH-MEASURING lvlAeHlNE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,160, dated August 31, 189'?.
Application filed April 7, 1897' To au whom .it may col/teorie.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Measuring Cloth; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improved machines for measuring cloth or similar goods in the piece at any time without the necessity of unwinding or the use of the ordinary yardstiok.
The invention consists in the combination, with a frame having mounted therein a foldindicating slip divided by transverse lines and consecutively numbered, of a iixed arm at one end of the frame, a sliding arm, a pointer or indicating-hand carried by the sliding arm and registering` with a scale to indicate the width of the piece,-and a movable indicating device divided into columns numbered at the head to correspond with the width-indicator, and each column containing iigures to indicate the yards and-fractions of yards, and a movable indicating-hand or pointer to register with both the fold-indicat ing slip and the movable yard and inch indieater, and to certain other novel features hereinafter described.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device complete, showing a piece of goods in position to be measured. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through one end of the machine, showing one manner of operating the movable yard and indicating device, also one manner of mounting the sliding arm for indicating the width of the fold.
The casingA, in which the parts are mounted, consists', preferably, of a rectangular box of any desired length and width, with the bot tom board extending out beyond the front face, as shown at A2, or having a separate strip attached thereto, for a purpose hereinafter explained Near each end of the ma- Serial No. 631,122. (No model.)
chine are legs or supports B B of suitable length to elevate the 'machine above the cloth-supporting table to permit the reception of a bolt of cloth or like fabric of large bulk between the table and the bottom of the casing.
The bottom A is provided with a slot A3, running longitudinally of the machine, in which slot is mounted a sliding arm C, which carries an indicating-hand or pointer D, eX- tending through a longitudinal opening or slot D in the front frame-piece. A rod E is secured in suitable brackets E, extending up from the frame, and upon which rod is pivotally mounted a pointer or indieator hand F, having a rear extension or thumbpiece F. This rcar or thumb piece is preierably made of sheet metal, with the lugs to form the pivot-al bearings bent down, and which lugs are constructed in such manner as to engage a notched bar G, formed in or attached to the upper edge of the front framecasing, and which notches are spaced to correspond to the fold-indicating strip. This 'told-indicating strip extends longitudinally from near each end of the machine and is divided into spaces consecutively numbered, and the pointer being moved on the rod after the number of folds in the bolt has been ascertained opposite or in line with such unmber on the strip.
The projecting edge of the frame i 2 is provided with a plate or strip divided into sections preferably one-eighth of an inch apart, with a series of igures of like numbers consecutively arranged, each number representing the quarter et' a whole-viz., 7, 71, 715, 7i, 8, Si, he-as shown at D2,
Vand represent the width of the bolt of goods, the same being indicated by the pointer D, carried by the sliding arm C, the movement or play of the pointer or hand being controlled by the engagement of the arm with the bolt of cloth or goods.
Mounted in the frame and running longitudinally thereof are rollers I, geared together, one shaft of .which is provided with a crank or handle I for permitting said rollers to be rotatedin either direction by the crank. There the sheet is short, or if the sheet is so long as to aiect the movement of the roll relative to the gears, said gears may be dispensed with IOO and the crank changed from the shaft of one roll to the shaft of the other. To these rollers is secured a sheet L of paper, cloth, linen, or like material, preferably about twenty-four inches Wide and forty inches long, divided into columns, each column being headed with a figure which corresponds in order with the figures on the width-scale and with the columns divided in sections and numbered with a series of figures of like number consecutively arranged, each of the series representin g the number Aof yards and fractional part thereof, the sheet of the dimensions described containing upward of ten thousand different calculations. This sheet may run over a bar M, extending from end to end of the machine, or over a roller or idler, and the face or numbers, as also numbers to indicate the folds, being covered with glass to protect them from injury.
To ascertain the number of yards and fractions or inches, after counting the folds the pointer F is carried on the rod E until it registers with a corresponding number on the column Il, and is then engaged with the notches G to hold it stationary. The sliding arm is then moved against the bolt or piece of goods resting upon one edge or side against the leg B', and the pointer D will indicate on the scale D2 the width of the goods or fold thereof. The crank is then turned to revolve the rollers to expose the column on the sheet having the head-number corresponding to the number indicated by the pointer D or the width-indicator, when the figures on the column opposite or in line with the pointer F Will indicate or show the whole number of yards and inches contained in the piece or bolt.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a machine for measuring cloth in the bolt, the combination of a fold-indicating slip divided or scaled, and having consecutive numbers, a sliding arm having a pointer, a
scale with which the same registers, a movable sheet divided into columns, the head of each column numbered correspondingly to the number on the scale, and with numbers to indicate the yards and fractions of yards, and a movable hand or pointer to register with both the fold-indicating slip and the movable yard and inch indicator, substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In amachine for measuring cloth in the bolt, a frame the supports therefor, a foldindicating slip divided or scaled and consecutively numbered, a sliding arm carrying a pointer, a plate or strip divided into sections with a series of figures of like number, consecutively arranged, and each number repre'- senting thc quarter of a whole, a pair of rollers carrying a sheet divided into columns, each column being headed with a figure which corresponds in order with the gurcs on the plate and with the column divided into sections and numbered with a series`of figures of like number consecutively arranged, and a movable hand or pointer to register with both the fold-indicating slip and the numbers on the column of the movable sheet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a machine for measuring cloth in the bolt, a fold-indicating slip, a sliding arm carrying a pointer, a scale with a series of iigures of like number consecutively arranged, a movable sheet divided into columns and numbered substantially as described, a mov` able pointer and means for setting and holding the same registered with the fold-indicatingslip, and means for moving the sheet to eX pose a column numbered to correspond with the number indicated by the pointer on the fold-indicating slip, as and for the purpose Set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD T. BUTLER.
