Description

Y UNITED s'rAT s.
P T NT OFFICE EDWIN is. one, or. nu'rnmr, NEW JERSEY, Assrenon To our YIELD ems comio- Barron, or NEW YORK, 1w. Y., a conrona'rxorr or NEW You.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I EDWIN H. GIBB, .a
I citizen of the United States, and resident of I quickly computed.
Nutley, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey-,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Computing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This in'ventiomrelates to computing devices and has for its primary object to provide a simple and inexpensive device whereby the interest yield of stocks and bonds for d fferent terms of years may be easily and More particularly, the present invention contemplates the provision of acomputing device of the above character in the .form
of a slide rule in which a movable web is mounted having indicia printed on its surface and a sheet of transparent material covering an exposed portion of the web, means for operating said movable web and a transparent slide memberhaving interest or dividend rates marked thereon and provided within an index, the body of the device along each of its longitudinal edges having the purchase price of stocks and bonds respectively indicated thereon, in alignment with which the index on the slide is adapted to be positioned, the indicia upon in w ic-h similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure '1 is a plan view of the computing device; I
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section showing the operating means for the web carrying rods, and
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable slide. Referring in detail to the drawing, 5'
1921. Serial no. 413,140.
designates the body of the device, preferably,
though not necessaril of wood and in the form of a flat barof t e requisite width and v length, one long tudinal side-of said bar being preferably chamfe'red or obliquely inclined as at 5. The bar 5 is formed with the spaced parallel longitudinally extending Cy Specification of Letters 2mm. t mt d A r, 1 ,1922} appncamn'mea Kay 27, 7
of the bar' and extending substantially for the full length thereof. To the marginal portions of this u per surface of the .bar and at each side oft e recess 7, strips of celluloid 0r other suitable material indicated at 8 are suitably secured, said celluloid strips bearing the spaced numbers A and B which respectively indicate the purchase price of stocks and bonds. A thin sheet of glass or other transparent material 9 extends over the recess 7 and also preferably upon the strips 8 to prevent possible obliteration of the printed numerals upon-said strips."
A longitudinally extending rotatable rod 10 is axially centered in each of the bores 6. To these spaced rods the ends of the web 11 are respectively secured, said web extending through the recess or channel 7 beneath the transparent plate 9. The surface of theweb is divided by longitudinally extending par-' allel lines and in the longitudinal divisions of the web surface the spaced numbers C are printed to indicate the interest yieldof stocks or bonds at the different purchase 7 These numbers are arrgnged in" prices. groups, each consistlng of five longitudinal rows on the surface of the web, each group of numbers being associated with a year number indicated at D, which is printed upon the central-portion of the web. f
To one end of each of the rods 10 a pinion 13 is fixed, said pinions meshing with opposite sides of an operating gear 14' which is mounted upon the inner side of a cap 15 secured upon one end. of the body bar 5 and closing the ends of the bores 6. The gear 14: may be conveniently. operated gear axis.
Upon the body 5*a slide member 17 is by a suitable. finger piece 16 fixed to the longitudinally movable. {Thisslidemember and has its ends inwardly flanged to engage with the beveled guide surfaces 18 formed upon the opposite side-edges of is likewise formed of transparent material the body bar On this slide an index line 17' is suitably delineated and at one side of said line, the characters E are printed ormarked upon the surface of the slide and are-indicative of the interest or dividend rates of the stocks or bonds, said characters being spaced apart to correspond with the spacing of the rows of numbers C on the Web.
From the foregoing description, the con struction, manner of use and several advantages of the invention will be readily understood. Thus, assuming that it is deslred to ascertain the interest yield of a bond maturing in one year having an interest rate of 6% and purchased at 98%, the slide.
member is shifted upon the barv until the index line 17 thereof is in line with the number 984 of the row of numbers B. The dividend rate being 6%, the reading is taken at the point where the 6% rate on the slide coincides with the row of numbers C on the web and it is found that the interest yield is 7 $70. If it is desired to compute the yield for a bond of longer maturity, this may be readily done by rotating the gear 14 in the proper direction to move the web 11 and expose another roup of the numbers C corresponding wit the number of years to maturity. In the same manner, the interest yieldof stocks may be ascertained. Thus, if a certain stock is purchased at 124 and the interest rate is 7%, the web is first moved to indicate zero years and by then shifting the slide member until the index line coincides with number 124 in the row of numbers A, the interest yield may be read upon the surface of the Web.
It will be understood that the web 11 may be of any desired length within reasonable limits and that the length of the bar 5 may be increased if desired sothat the rows of numbers A and B can be extended to denote a greater range of prices. The device as herein described is likewise susceptible of many other modifications in the form, proportion and arrangement of the several parts and I accordingly reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A computing device of the character described comprising a body Ibar having parallel longitudinally extending bores and a recess in its upper surface communicating with said bores, rotatable rods axially cenparent plate extending over said recess, said web having indicia thereon visible through said transparent plate, a transparent slide member longitudinally movable upon the bar having an index thereon adapted to be positioned with respect to the indicia at each side of the recess and also bearing indicia adapted to be read in conjunction with the indicia on the web, and means for rotating said rods to position the indicia on the web in said recess.
2. A computing device of the character described comprising a body bar having spaced longitudinally extending bores therein and a recess in the upper side of said bar communicating with said bores, indicia on the upper surface of the bar at each side of the recess indicative of the purchase price of stocks and bonds respectively, said web bearing indicia indicating the interest yield of stocks and bonds, and the term for which they are issued, a transparent slide member longitudinally movable upon said bar and extending over said recess, said slide member having indicia indicating the interest or dividend rates of stocks and bonds and being provided with an index adapted to be positioned with respect to the purchase price indications at opposite sides of the recess, and means for rotating said rods to move said web and position the indicia thereon in said recess.
3. A computin device of the character described comprislng a body member having a longitudinally extending slot and having .indicia at the side of the slot, a web mounted for movement across the slot and having indicia thereon, and a slide movable longitudinally upon the body member and adapted to register with any desired element of the indicia at the side of the slot, said slide having indicia thereon adapted to be read in conjunction with the indicia on the web, and said indicia at the above mentioned parts being arranged to indicate the purchase price of securities, the interest or dividend rates of such securities and the interest yield of the securities at their purchase prices.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereunder.
EDWIN H. GIBB.
