, of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Record Attachment for Waiters or Merchandise Checks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y

The purpose of the invention is to provide a simple record device adapted for use in connection with waiters and merchandise checks of all descriptions to carry a duplicate of the amounts of individual entries or checks used during a given period or a duplicate of the totals of individual checks, as desired, and, further, to provide a shifting record or tally sheet for such purpose carried by the same support as the checks and readily removed from its support and which will present a surface for the duplicate entry adjacent to the checks and as readily accessible to the checker asthe check, enabling a checker, cashier, or other designated person to as readily make the record entry upon the record or tally sheet as on the check.

Another purpose of the invention is to place the record or tally sheet in an endless form upon the support and to provide a means whereby any portion of the record or tally sheet can be brought to the front of the support or adjacent to the check at any time and enable each waiter, clerk, or salesman to have always at hand during'the time of service a complete duplication of the prices of all articles disposed of during such time and enabling the persons balancing or comparing accounts to have before them at such time in convenient form a complete record of all sales made by each individual employed during certain specified periods of time.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken practically on $erial No. 102,420. (No model.)

Any desired or appropriate material may be employedin the construction of the device, and in the preferred form of the device it primarily consists of front and back cover members A and B, preferably connected at their lower ends, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4, an'

intermediate board or supporting leaf or member 0, and a tally or record sheet D, adjustably and removably carried by the supporting member; 0. Usually the back cover member Bis provided with a clip 10 at its upper end, adapted to fold over the front face of the front cover member A and be locked thereto in any suitable manner by means of a spring-button 11 and a socket-section 12- for example, said clip serving to prevent the record or tally sheet D from accidentally leaving its support.

The record or tally strip or sheet D is preferably made of paper and is ruled with transverse and'vertical lines, whereby it is divided into-columns for convenience in keeping the figures to be placed thereon in proper alinement, although the record or tally sheet or strip may be plain, if desired. This record or tally sheet is slipped over the supporting member 0 in an endless form-namely', with two opposing edges pasted together or otherwise directlycorinected or with their opposing edges connected by tapes or like. means,

either elastic or non-elastic: When the record or tally sheet D is in position on the supporting member 0, it is sufficiently snug to remain where set, which will be between the ends of the supporting member 0, but sulficiently loose to permit the sheet to be turned or shifted upon the supporting member by the thumb and a finger of the hand engaging the sheet at opposite sides of the supporting member 0, preferably at a point near its right-hand edge. 1

One or more columns on the record or tally sheet D are exposed, preferably, at the front right-hand portion of the front cover by producing a longitudinal recess 13 in the righthand edge of the front cover A, as is shown in Fig. 1, and about midway of the longitudinal wall of the said recess 13 a smaller recess 14 is preferably produced to receive the thumb of the hand when shifting the sheet D, and a corresponding recess 15 is made in the back cover 13,- extending inward from its edge to expose the back portion of the record or tally sheet to the touch of the finger employed in moving the sheet.

Any desired number of checks E or bill forms of any description are placed upon the outer surface of the front cover A, and said checks or bill forms are so placed as not to cover or conceal the column of the tally or record sheet exposed by the front of the device, as is shown in. Fig. 1. The checks or bill forms E are usually secured to the device at their lower marginal vportions or stubs by Magill fasteners 16 or equivalent means, passed through the package or pad of checks and through apertures 17 and 18, made in the front coverA and the supporting member 0, the inner ends of the fasteners being clenched at the back of the supporting member, as is shown in Fig. 4:. Thus it will be observed that the stubs or lower marginal portions of the checks E maybe removed when the pad of checks is exhausted and another pad may be conveniently placed on the device.

Upper and lower transverse ribs 19 are usually formed upon the inner face of the back cover B to have bearing against the upper and lower portions of the supporting member Gin order to prevent the said back cover bearing against the record-sheet, and thus interfering with its movement, and, if desired, a strip or band of fabric or a reinforcing-strip of any kind may be secured upon the outer face of the record or tally sheet at thatportion which passes the recesses 14 and 15 to strengthen the sheet at such point and to keep it clean. In such an event such strip may be skipped in making the entries on the sheet.

In the operation of' the device when the cashier or checker or other authorized person places the price of the article sold in the account-c0111 mn of the check or bill E he immediately afterward produces the same amount in any vacant space of the column of the record or tally sheet exposed at the front of the device, and after the exposed column on the tally-sheet has been filled with entries the tally-sheet is shifted on its support to bring another empty column at the front of the device, the last-filled column being carried beneath the pad of checks. Under this arrangement the waiter or salesman will have always at hand a complete record of all sales made from a given time, and at the end of the day, for example, the record or tally sheet can be removed from its'support and handed in to the person revising the accounts, thus enabling such person to have before him a complete inventory of all sales made by each employee dispensing goods, and the sum totals of the figures on the various control-sheets can then be compared with the figures on the checks turned in and upon a proper balance being obtained evidence of the correctness of the accounts is secured.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 1. In a record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, a board-like support, a cover for the support, checks carried by the cover, and a sleeve-like control or tally sheet mounted to slide beneath the cover and having a section exposed at the margin of the cover, for the purpose specified.

2. In a record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, covers one of which has a longitudinal recess in one of its edges, a board-like support between the covers, and a sleeve-like tally-sheet mounted to turn on the said support, as set forth.

3. In a record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, a support, covers therefor, the covers having recesses exposing a portion of the support, and a control or tally sheet having its ends connected and mounted to turn around the support, a portion of the control or tally sheet being visible at the recessed portions of the covers and the said control or tally sheet being detachable from its support, for the purposes specified.

4. A record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, comprising front and back cover members, one of the members having a longitudinal recess along one edge, a board-like supporting member between the cover members, and a tally-sheet mounted to move on the supporting member and to have a portion thereof exposed to view at the recess of said cover member, as set forth.

5; A record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, comprising front and rear cover members, one of the cover members having a longitudinal recess at one edge, a board-like supporting member between the cover members and secured to the recessed member, and an endless tally-sheet, mounted on the support to turn thereon, as set forth.

6. A record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, comprising front and rear cover members connected together, one of the cover members having a longitudinal recess in one edge, and a small recess in the wall of the said recess, and the other cover member being provided with a recess extend ing inward from its edge, a supporting member secured at one end to one of the cover members, an endless tallystrip movably mounted on the support, and checks secured to the cover member having the longitudinal recess, as set forth.

7. A record attachment for waiters and merchandise checks, comprising front and back cover members connected together at one end, one of the said members being provided with a flap at its free end adapted to members, checks on the outer face of one cover member, and fastening devices for se- 1 curing the cheeks and support to one cover member, as set forth.
