UNIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. STUARD, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO -THOMAS E. WANAMAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
P U RCHA SlZNG -ISH EET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,368, dated September 30, 1890.
Application filed August 4, 1890. Serial No. 360,927. (Nomodell) .To all whom it may concern:-
'Be it known that I, THOMAS P. STUARD, of
the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in' Purchasing -Sheets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref
erence being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a purchasing sheet or book to prevent mistake either on the part of the purchaser or the seller, or to allow a mistake to be easily traced when made, and a further object is to provide for the convenience of the purchaser where numerous articles are to be purchased at different departments of the same store by obviating the necessity of having the goods wrapped and delivered and the money paid at each purchase, while atthe same time a correct record is made on the said sheet, and
after all the goods have been purchased at the difierent departments of the store they may be thus collected at one delivering-point and bound together for delivery and payment of all the purchases made at one time, with the liability to error reduced to a minimum.
My invention relates to an improvementin sale sheets or books for use in large retail and other stores; and it consists in a sheet, preferably of stiff paper, having a longitudinal section of the same detachable from the main sheet, upon which detachable section a column is provided for the entry thereon of the articles purchased and a separate column for the total amount of each purchase. Upon the main sheet are also provided similar columns for the entry of the articles purchased and the total amount of each purchase opposite thereto. There is also preferably provided a space for the number of each purchase opposite each purchase, and also, in like manner, a column for the number or letter of the department, a column for thenumber of the sales man, and a column for the number of the pieces. Both the main sheet and the detachable sheet are also preferably provided with a space for the aggregate total amount of the purchases, the number of the transferbin, and
the registry number of the said purchase 1 sheet, so that the articles and the amount of the purchase, the registry-number, and number of transfer-bin correspond on each sheet. On the main sheet is provided a number of sheets, preferably 'of thin paper, bound together at the top, said thin sheets being columned and lined, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout. 7
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my inven-' tion with the bound thin sheets thrown back, disclosing the construct-ion of the main sheet with the detachable sheets.- Fig 2 is a plan view showing one of the detachable thin sheets turned back to the line of its perforations as when in use, showing the construction and form of arrangement printed or otherwise marked on the said slip or sheet. Fig. 3 shows the construction and form of arrangement of the back of the sheet. Fig. 4 shows one of the detachable sheets detached from the main sheet.
A is the main sheet, and A the detachablelongitudinal sheet forming part of the main sheet A. To the main sheet A are bound together at the top the pack of sheetsB B, the
sheets 13 B being capable of being detached from each other by means of the perforations 17, provided across the same midway of their length. All the sheets A A B B and the detachable slip or coupon A provided at the bottom of the detachable slip A, are provided severally with the same registry-number, so that when detached they may be traced by the registry-number. The sheet A is provided on its face with lines and separate columns E for the entry of each purchase consisting of one or more articles, and column e for the number of the purchases; 6, for the department;c for the salesmans number; a for the number of pieces or remarks, and e for the amount of each separate purchase, and at the bottom is provided a space for totaling the amounts. The sheet A is also provided, preferably, with the number of the transfer-bin, and a separate space A detachable, if desired, from the main sheet A, is also provided at the bottom of the sheet A, having preferably thereon a line for the amounts in IOC total of the prices of thegoods, the amounts received from the customer, and the number of the transfer-bin. The detachable longi tudinal sheet A is provided with a column and lines for the entry of each purchase consisting of one or more articles, and columns for the entry of the amount of each separate purchase corresponding to that on the main sheet A, together with the number of the registry-bin and the registry-number hereinbefore stated. A detachacle slip A is provided at the bottom of the sheet A and has there0n,besides the registry number and number of the transfer-bin a space for the amounts of the purchases.
The sheet B is provided on its back, which notes, such as the number of accompanying packages, the name of the person by whom marked O. K, the name of the sales person, and the number of the department, and any other necessary notes, together with the number of the transfer-bin.
.The detachable sheet B, which was originally a part of the sheet B, is preferably marked duplicate and also has, in addition to this and the registry-number, a space for the number of the transfer-bin. The back of the sheet Ais also preferably provided with a section or space marked off thereon, upon which may be entered, on lines designated for the purpose, the name of the party to be charged and his residence, the name of the party by whom the goods are purchased, and the place where the goods are to be delivered also a space for other notes, such as how the goods are to be sent, the wrapper-number, settled for by whom, and time of settlement, &c., with any other desirable directions. Separate sections or spaces are also preferably provided for use in the case some of the goods purchased are to be shipped to different parties at'different addresses. Each said separate section is provided with spaces for the names of the parties to whom the goods are to be sent, together with the address, and also with separate columns and lines for the entering of articles purchased, the amount of each purchase, number of goods, number of the pieces, or remarks, and by whom entered.
.As each purchase is made an entry is made upon the sheetA, the detachable strip A, and the perforated sheet B upon the columns and linesprovided for the purpose, with the name, residence, article purchased, amounts, &c. After the entry of the purchase is fully entered on the respective sheets on the columns and lines provided for the purpose the dupliperforations b from the duplicate sheet B. The entry on the sheet B is transferred onto its duplicate sheet B by means of a detached or bound carbon-sheet O, placed between the folded sheets B B. One of the sheets, as B, is putwith the goods to be sent to the transfer bin and the other retained by the wrapper or inspector. The purchaser then, desiring to make other purchases, takes the whole sheet with him, minus the sheets detached, as described, and upon making another purchase or purchases has an entry made on the different respective sheets and strips, as hereinbefore described, which is repeated at the several counters until all his purchases are made in the various departments of the store. The purchaser, after settlement, to be secured in case of errors, is given the sheet A, detached from the main sheet A, having the registry-number and list of purchases and amounts of each entered thereon, and the balance of the sheet is retained by the store.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
