Description

i e e I' e:
mich tetes @anni ffmc,
IMPROVED POLIGEMANS BATTLE.
FRANCIS I?. SMILEY, CHARLES K. BECEER," AND ISAAC TCWNSEND, 0E
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent-No. 60,072, dated November 27, 1866 4 S'QECIFICATION. TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY OONGERN: l I A Be it known that we, FRANCIS I. SMILEY, CHARLES HBECHEE, and ISAAC TowNsEND, all of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in thePolicemanfs Rattle; and we do hereby declare Vthat the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in I which the said improved rattle is shown in longitudinal section, the letters of reference thereon indicating the I ,1
different parts referred to herein. v
The object of our improvement is' to a'ord a policemans rattle that will not only admit of its handles being turned down parallel with the body yof the rattle for Athe purpose of being more'conveniently carried in his ,I y
pocket, but that will also admit of the said handles being readily turned and securedin alignment with themaziis of the ratchet-wheel, so that the requisite whirling or revolvingrmotion may be.continuously givenin the same direction to the body of the rattle' thereon, as occasion may rendernecessary.
The nature of our said invention consists in attaching the handle to the'body of the rattle, bymeans of a joint in combination with the. axis of the ratchet-wheel, substantially` as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, .A B is the body o f the rattle, C thefhandle, and a" the ratchet-wheel. The body, A B,
with its snapspringa, and its ratchet-wheel, of', is made in Vthe usual manner, but the axis, b", of the ratchetl wheel a, instead of being rigidly extended to form ythe handle, as heretofore, is `made to have 'a projecting hollow or slotted boss, 6', within which the joint end of the handle, C, is secured by a pivot, so as to allow the i said handle to be either closed againstV the body of the rattle, as shownin the drawing, oropenedout in `a straight line with the axis of the ratchet-wheel, et, as indicated by .the dotted lines. In order to enable `the policeman to close and open the said handle with facility and at pleasure, a `small lever, c", having a spring, c,VI` ,I attached, is constructed to have a notch, c, at one end, and a thumb-pi`ece,c", Vat thefother, and arranged to I I I If be vibrated upon a fulcrum pivot, in a mortise in 'the` handle, C, so that when the said handle `is-turned,"outward into alignment with the axis of ,the ratchet-wheel, 11" the end of thelever `c', will springbehind Icatch I1 of the boss b, and thus hold the handle securely in the aligned or extended position indicated'by'tliesad dotted lines of the drawing; and so also that by pressing on the thumb `end em', of the saidlever c,'the`'latte`r, will be detached from the catch b, and allow the() handle to be closedwith facility against theside of the A B, of the rattle, as shown in thedrawing. l .i i f., l
It will readily be seen that this jointed handle will enable the policeman to whirl or revolyhi-,srattlef `its handle-which often becomes a necessary operation-as well as to close the handle downwithffaeilityagainst the side of the body of the rattle, for convenience of carrying it in his pocket. I i i I, i p I l i We donot desire toclaim, broadly, the making the handle of a plicemans rattle to close` `against theside of "the body `of the same; but, having fully described our improvement'a'nd shownfits Iutilityrwfhat we claim as new therein, of our invention, and desire to secure bylLetters Patent,i s cdnnedstd the following, viz: 4
@und I We claim the application to a policemans rattleof `a jointed handle, uconstrncted and arranged toloperate in combination therewith, substantially as and for the purposes described.
