To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. HAMEELDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menands, in the county of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Oar- Ooupler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for uniting railway-cars in a train; and the object of my invention is to provide a means for taking up shocks and blows which the knuckle of a carcoupler of the Master Oar-Builders type receives when the adjoining parts come together; also, to give elasticity to the coupler when the train is making a curve. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan, and Fig. 2 is a section.

y It is a fact well known in the art that the coming together of cars often causes a breakage in the coupler by the impact.
By my coupler I provide for a certain giving of the parts, cushioning the impinging portions, and thus prevent,or, at least, greatly lessen, the danger of breakage.
In the draw-head A, I place the bolts B B, each of said bolts having its head O provided 'with an opening, through which the main pin D passes. The bolts B B each carrya spring E,with its seat upon a washer F,which Washer engages with the shoulder f in the draw-head A, said bolt also provided at its end with a nut Ct Within an opening a in the draw-head A. The opening clin the draw-head A,through which the bolt D passes, is elongated, allowing for the lateral movement of the bolt D. The pivoted knuckle G is in contact with the main bolt D, which, being in contact with the bolts B B, carrying the springs E, will give, cushioning the knuckle and reducing to a minimum the danger of breakage.
I do not wish to limit myself to the construction of the bolts B B as shown nor to the eX- act manner of connecting up the same. Instead of placing the springs E upon the shank of the bolts B they may be incased within a su fiiciently close-tittin g chamber in the draw- Serial No. 642,399. (No model.)

Not only does my coupler serve a very usey ful purpose in preventing breaking of the coupler at the time of making connection, but it is also of great value when the train is rounding a curve and also when the cars are started suddenly, Vhen the knuckle receives the pulling strain, the strain is transferred, through the pin D, to the bolts B B, and thus cause a compression of the springs E, said springs also having a seat in the draw-head at c adjacent to the head O, thus tending to cushion the portions of the coupler at the time of starting the train. Because of the location of the springs within the draw-head after the train is started and the main boltD is drawn to the limit of the elongated opening CZ there is no longer any strain upon the spring. There is nothing that could operate to hamper or delay the use of the coupler if the spring portion should get out of repair, since the main pin D can operate as it usually does incase anything shouldoccur to prevent the operation of the springs. 1
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupler, the combination of a bolt, an eye-head secured thereto, or integral therewith, said bolt adapted to reciprocate within the draw-head, a spring havinga seat within thedraw-head and carried upon the shank of said bolt, a main piu. passing through an elongated opening in the draw-head and through the eye in said eye-head, a pivoted knuckle on the draw-head, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination of a knuckle pivoted to the draw-head, a main pin passing through t-he draw-head, eye bolts or plates each having an opening to receive the pin, a spring in contact with each of said eye bolts or plates, all so arranged that the knuckle which is in contact with the main pin, When impact is made will cause through the eye bolts or plates the springs to compress, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a car-coupler, a main pin passing through the draw-head in an opening allow- Ioo ing for alateral movement 0f said pin, a spring arranged at the side near each end of said main pin, said spring mounted in the drawhead, a seat for said spring in the draw-head adjacent t0 the main pin s0 arranged that when a pulling strain is applied t0 the coup- 1er the parts submitted t0 strain are cushone'd by said springs, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
