CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,156, dated April 6. 1886- Applieation filed August 13, 1885. Serial No. 174,246. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT H. DOWLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section. Fig. 4 is a vertical section. Fig. 5 is a front view.
This invention relates to car couplings; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularlypointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the draw-head, the shank of which is seated in bearings of the car in the usual manner. At the front end and at one side the drawhcad A is provided with an integral outwardly and forwardly extending horn or curved guide-arm, B, which is bounded on its front face by an inwardly and rearwardly extending curve, B,which forms the boundarywall on one side of an arc-shaped recess, 0, which extends partially around an arc-shaped shoulder, I), and is continued in the rear of said shoulder D in the stem D of the drawhead, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. An arc-shaped proj ection,F, extendsinto the arc-shaped recess 0 at a point about opposite the middle of said recess 0. Fitti nginto the arc-shaped recess 0' is the rear end, 0, of a nearly S-shaped jaw, F, of the draw-head, which rear end, G, is, however, somewhat shorter than the arc-shaped recess C, so that the rear end, 0, of the S-shaped jaw may have play therein, for the purposes of opening and closing thejaw F, when desired.
In the longer curved side II of the rear end of the movable S-shaped jaw F, at about the middle of the curve, I provide a depression or seat, I, for the guard J of the coupling pin or key K, in front of which depression or seat I the curved removable S shapedjawis cut away entirely across the face of the arc, to form a part, I, of the key-hole, that serves, in connection with the keyguard .I, to lock the movable jaw in the closed position. of the key-hole is made just inside of the curve that bounds the rear face of the horn or curved guide-arm B, and this portion of the keyhole passes vertically entirely across the face of the guide-arm B, and opens into the part I of the key-hole. The upper end of the key K is provided with a shouldered head, K, having a ring, K by which to lift it when necessary. The key in this instance therefore forms a lock instead of working through the shank of the claw, as heretofore.
Above the draw-head is the buffer mechanism, which compriscs the Ushaped pocket L for the buffer-rod L, and the encircling-spring J, through which the buffer-rod L passes. The two prongs of the U-shaped piece M extend through the end sill, M, of the car and through a sill-plate, M let into the outer face of the end sill of the car, which sill-plate is securely bolted to the outer face of the end sill, and subserves the double purpose of securing the U-shaped pocket firmly for holding the buffer-spring J and also holding the sill-plate in place. The sill-plate M is embedded in the end sill, and is provided with a hole, M at its middle, through which the buffer-rod L plays. The sill-plate ,M is also provided with two holes, P P, to permit the passage of the prongs of the U-shaped piece M to receive the nuts which hold it to place. The buffer-rod follows the projection Q of the draw-head, and serves as a cushion for said draw-head projection Q to play against, and divides thestrain between the draw-head spring R and the buffer-spring J and prevents them from being broken under severe shocks. By this construction The other portion, L,-
neither the draw-head spring nor the bufferspring is permitted to become fully compressed, because before such compression can take place the projection Q of the draw-head strikes the place M in the end sill. In this connection I providealever-arm, V, along the end sill or along the platform, if necessary, which lever-arm V is connected by a chain or rod to the coupling pin or key, to operate the same in coupling and uncoupling the cars. pinhole, IV, is provided in the outer end the movable jaw, in order that the ordinary link and coupling-pin may be used with this draw-head, when necessary.
The patent granted to me October 7 1884, No. 306,326, shows a draw-head having an integral guidebook, and an S-shaped coupling-hook having its shank arranged in an arc-shaped recess in the draw-head, and an operating-key having an offset, and I therefore do not claim such devices, broadly, in the present case.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a car-coupling, a draw-head having a hook or claw and a movable S-shaped jaw, and a pin or key having a projecting guard working in the outer circle of the hook or claw and engaging a shouldered key-hole in the movable Sshaped jaw, substantially as specified.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the stem of the draw-head having the areshaped recess, the arcshaped shoulder, and the integral hook or'claw having a portion of a key-seat in its inner circle, of the S-shaped movable jaw having a shouldered key-seat in the longer are of its inner end, and the key with the horizontally-projecting guard, substantially as specified.
3; The combination,with the draw-head stein having the arc-shaped shoulder, the arc-shaped recess, and the integral recessed guide-hook, of the S-shaped movable jaw having a shouldered-key-seat in the longer are of its inner end, substantially as specified.
4.' The combination, with the draw-head stem havlng the arc-shaped recess, the arc-shaped shoulder, and the integral recessed guide-hook,
of the S-shaped movable jaw having the keyseat in the longer are of its inner end and the 0 pin-hole in its outer end, and the shouldered key with the horizontally-projecting guard, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the end sill, the U-shaped pocket over and above the stem of 5 the draw-head, the buffer-rod, and the encircling-spring, of the U-shaped piece in the U- shaped pocket, the sill-plate, and the securingnuts, substantially as specified.
6. The combinatiomwith the draw-head pro- 50 vided with the projection Q, of the U-shaped pocket provided with the U-shaped piece M, the buffer-rod N, the encircling-spring, and the U-shaped piece in the U-shaped pocket, substantially as specified.
7. The combination, with the drawhead having the projection Q, of the spring-actuated buffer-rod, substantially as specified.
8. The combination, with the draw-head having the stationary j aw, the S-shaped mova- 6o ble jaw, the locking-key, and projection Q, of the springaetuated buffer-rod, substantially as specified.
