CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,358, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed February 3, 1886. Serial No. 190,724.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. ADAMS, James D. Fnn'rnonsnn, and ALBERT LAW- TENSLAGER, all of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in (lac Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 1o drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of our improved car coupling, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the drawheads, the coupling-links being shown in section. Fig. 8 is a sectional plan view of a part of the coupling, taken through the line an a:, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the car-couplings for which Letters Patent No. 305,261 were issued to us September 16, 1884, in such a manner as to make them more reliable in operation.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the carcoupling, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
A represents the draw-head of the car- 0 coupling, which is made with a flaring mouth,
so that the coupling-link I5 will enter it with certainty.
The coupling-head A is designed to be secured to the car in the ordinary manner. In
5 the top of the coupling-head A is formed a slot, (3, of sufficient size to allow the couplinghook D to be readily inserted and removed through it. In the rear end of the hook D is formed a short slot, E, to receive the pin F,
40 by means of which the said hook is secured in place. The pin F can he kept in place by a key or other suitable means, and should be so arranged as to allow the eonplinghead A to have the necessary play.
5 The coupling-hook I) is made with two hooks, G H, upon its lower side, which enter slots I J in the lower side of the draw'head A. The rear hook, H, is made long, so that it will never be raised out of its slot J when the car-coupling is in use.
The forward upper corner of the coupling- (No model.)
hook D is beveled or inclined to fit against the beveled seat K at the forward end of the slot 0, so that a draft strain upon the said hook. will hold it more firmly in place and prevent it from jumping upward and releasing the coupling-link.
The forward side of the forward hook, G, is inclined or rounded, so that the hook D will be raised by the contact of the coupling-link B when the cars are run together to allow the end of the said link to pass the forward hook, G, when the coupling-hook Ddrops back into place and the cars are coupled, the forward hook, G, passing through the said link B.
The inclined forward side of the forward hook G rests against an inclined seat, L, at the forward end of the slot I. The forward side of the rear hook, H, is inclined or rounded, and rests against an inclined seat, M, at the forward end of the slot J, so that the coup ling-hook D is provided with four bearingpoints, the inclined seats K L M, and the pin F.
\Vith this construction each draw-head A is permanently provided with a coupling-link,
B, the inner end of which is held by the rear hook, H, of the double hook D, and which, when two cars are run together, enters the draw-head of the adj accnt car, raises the coup 8o ling-hook D,and passes and engages with the forward hook, G, so that the draft strain will be sustained by two independent links, either of which will sustain the draft strain should the other link be broken.
With this construction, should both the links B be broken, the cars can be coupled by an ordinary coupling-link, the ends of which engage with the forward hooks, G, of the double hooks D, and with this arrangement the coupo ling will still be automatic. v
In recesses in the sides of the draw-head A, upon the opposite sides of the shank of the coupling-hook D, and in front of the pin F, are placed loose weights N, the forward parts of which rest upon the inner end of the coupling-link permanently connected with the said draw-head, and which should he of sufficient gravity to hold the other end of the said link raised, so that it will enter the drawhead of an adjacent car automatically. The forward movement of the weights N is prevented by ribs 0, formed upon the inner surfaces of the sides of the draw-head A. lhe links B are held against the rearward push when the cars are run together, and the forward ends of the said links strike the hooks of the adjacent cars by shoulders P,formed upon the inner surfaces of the sides of the draw-head A.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 10 Patent l. The combination, with the draw-head formed with the open flaring mouth, the top slot, 0, the bottom slots, I J, the weight-recesses on its inner sides, and the ribs 0, pro- 15 jeeting from said inner sides in front of the said recesses, of the weights N in said re eesses, the pin F in rear of the recesses, the coupling-hook D, having a shank projecting rearward between vthe ribs 0 to its pivot-pin 20 F, and having the two hooks G H at its forward end,and the permanent link B, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car coupling, the combination, with the draw-head A, having slots 0 I J, and beveled seats K L M at the forward 25 ends of the said slots, of the double hook D, beveled at the upper part of its forward end, and having a short forward hook, G, and a longer rear hook, H, on its lower side, and the fastening-pin F, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby two couplinglinks can be connected independently with the said draw-head, as set forth.
