CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,517, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed July 13, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUSTINE W. Es- LEECK and FRANK M. EAMES, citizens of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplers and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in automatic car-couplers; and it has for its object to provide a pivoted couplingllook adapted to be raised by the link entering the drawhead, and to drop by gravity and efi'ect a coupling; to form hearings in the draw-head for the frontof the hook in order to relieve the pivot of strain; to provide the link-opening in the draw-head with shoulders to arrest the link, in order that enough of it will protrude to engage with the coupler of the adjoining car, and to so form the hook-chamber in the drawhcad that the hook may have a limited upward movement therein. These objects we attain in a manner and by mechanism hereinafter fully explained.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a longitudinal section of the draw-head and coupling-link, the hook being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a front view of the draw-head, showing the coupling-hook in its raised position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the coupling-hook.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the draw-head, in which is formed link-opening B. This opening extends only so far to the rear as will allow the link 0 to enter a sufficient distance to be engaged by the hook, and is there terminated by a shoulder, b, on either side, the object of which will be hereinafter explained.
In the top of the draw-head is a rectangular aperture, D, which at its front extends down ward to the linkopening, its front wall, 11, being at a right angle to the top of the drawhead. At the rear this aperture merges into a chamber, E, extending well back into the draw-head, for the reception of the arm of the coupling-hook. In the bottom wall of this chamber at the front is'a notch, e, for a purpose to be presently explained.

F represents the coupling-hook, which comprises a hooked projection, f, a rectangular head, f, and a rearwardly-extending arm, f. The purpose of headf is to give weightto the coupling-hook, (to insure prompt action in dropping to place when the link has en tered the draw-heart) and also to take against the front wall of aperture D as a support for the pivot-bolt. The hooked projection has a curved face, and is chamfered off on opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 3, in order that it may enter the link.
The coupling-hook is pivoted at g in chamber E, and is capable of describing an arc of a circle in an upward direction therein, and in aperture D, until arrested by the upper wall of the chamber, as clearly shown by the drawings, which occurs soon after the hooked projection has cleared the entering link.
For raising the coupling-hook in uncoupling cars, any of the well-known systems of levers adapted to the purpose may be employed, the hook being provided on top with a ring, h, for attachment thereto of such elevating mechanism.
In the operation of coupling cars the link enters opening B until it strikes against the book, which, owing to its curved face, 1s forced upward until the end of the link has cleared it, when by gravity the hook will fall and enter the link. \Vhen the couplinghook is down, the top of its head lies flush with the top of the draw-head, there bemg no projection of the hook except the ring on top. For this reason, and for the reason that the head acts as a weight, there is but little danger of the hook becoming accidentally disengaged from the link. It will be observed that the front part of the head abuts squarely against the front wall of aperture D, and the hooked projection takes into notch c, whereby the pivot-bolt g is relieved of strain which would otherwise come upon it.
'Thelink in its upward movement is arrested by shoulders I), which are so located as to insure that enough of it shall protrude from the draw-head to engage with the coupler on the adjoining car.
As a precaution against any inconvenience which might possibly arise by the breaking of the pin of this coupler, a hole is formed through the draw-head, as shown in dotted IOC 1o hook F, comprising a hooked projection, f,
