CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,529, dated December 4, 1883. Application filed June 12, 1883. (N0 model.)
T0 at whom it may c0n0crn.-
Be it known that We, AARON B. GROFF and AMBROSE E. STRAYER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Lilleyville, in the county of Mifflin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section, showing thecoupling pin raised. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on line' :0 m, Fig. 1.
Our invention relates to certain' improvements in car-couplings whereby the operation of coupling is rendered very easy, and the greatest strength and simplicity of parts are secured, the construction and arrangement of which we will now proceed to describe.
Referring to the drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the draw-head, formed with the usual flaring mouth, and having the chamber or re cess B.
(l is an opening in the top of said draw-head extending down to the chamber B.
a 0; are shoulders or projections at the top of the chamber B, where the'same opens into the opening 0.
D is a guide-block which is placed in the opening 0, the lower part of said block extending down into the chamber B.
b are shoulders on the guide-block, which engage with the shoulders at and prevent said guideblock from resting on the bottom of the chamber B. The lower part, (2, of the guideblock is beveled, and presents an inclined surface to the coupling-link, and allows the same to be readily pushed under said guide-block.
c is a depression or recess in the guideblock, which receives the lower end of the coupling-pin when the same is pushed back and raised while coupling or uncoupling.
c is a rounded projection on the bottom of the guide-block. Said guide-block D, resting upon the rear end of the link, holds it in position to engage with the draw-head of the adjoining car.
d is a lid which covers the opening 0, and is secured in any suitable manner.
E is a vertical slot opening from the top of the draw-head into the chamber B and opening 0, the front of said slot being perpendicular and the rear inclined to allow the lower part of the coupling-pin to be pushed back when coupling or uncoupling, as shown in Fig. 3.
e are triangular journal -bearings on each side of the slot E.
e are projections which prevent the pin from jolting out when coupled.
is a recess or slot, which receives the projecting arm F of the coupling-pin.
F is a gravitating coupling-pin, having the trunnions f, which engage with the journalbearings e.
F is a downwardly-projecting arm, which enters the slot 0 the lower end of said arm F bearing upon the bottom of the slot 6 when the pin is pushed back and raised, and is the center upon which said pin swings.
a is a slot in the bottom of the chamber B, with which the lower end of the coupling-pin engages when the link is drawing upon the pin and the cars are coupled.
f is a hook or handle on the top of the pin F.
Gris the coupling-link.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The lower part of the pin F, receiving the thrust of the link, is forced up into the recess 0 in the guide-block, and the end of the link passes under said guide-block, and the pin drops back to its normal position and the coupling is effected. The guide-block D, resting on the rear end of the coupling-links, holds the same in proper position to engage with the draw-head of the adjoining car.
- When it is desired to uncouple the cars, by
catching hold of the hook or handle f and having the arm F and trunnions f, substanthrowing thehand forward thepinFis raised tially as and for the purpose shown and deout of a coupled position. scribed.
Having thus fully described our invention, In testimony whereof we affix our signatures 5 we claim as new and desire to secure by Letin presence of two witnesses.
