CAR-COUPLING.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,789, dated November 21, 1882,
Application filed September 15,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YOUNG P. HUDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gatewood, in the county of Ripley and State ot'Missouri, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplers; and the object thereof is to increase the simplicity of construction, whereby its operation will be more certain, with less liability of its becoming out of order, and at the same time possess the required strength and durability necessary to withstand the strain and usage to which the couplings are subjected. These several objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent respectively the draw-heads of the two adjoining cars, connected thereto in any suitable manuer. The draw-head A is cast on its upper side with a slot, or, and cars 11, between which is pivoted a wedge-shaped latch, G, extending down through the slot into the drawhead. The interior lower side of the drawhead A is cast with an upwardly-projecting incline plane, D, to form a guide for the coupling-link c. This incline plane D is slightly concave upon its inner side to more effectually hold the link from vertical play, and the end of the incline plane, which is very narrow, is beveled, as shown at d, to form a seat for the wedge-shaped latch O.
A pivoted shaft, e, is supported by brackets f, secured to the truck or platform of the car; or the shaft may be connected in any other suitable manner found most convenient.
To the shaft 6 is secured a rod, 9, bent in such manner and of the required length to extend up or be operated from the platform, side,
or top ofthe car, and is connected by a link, h, chain, or other suitable means to the wedgeshape latch G at its upper end.
To the pivoted shaft (3, directly under the draw-head B, as it strikes the face of the incline plane D, will be guided upward thereon until the end of the link comesin contact with vthe face of the latch 0, when it will force the end of the latch off its seat and allow the link to pass between it and the end of the ipclined plane and over the latter against the concaveside thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, after which the latch will return to its normal position and prevent the link from being Withdrawn. In uncoupling, the curved plate E, which is connected to the pivoted shalt e, is forced up in the position indicated by dotted lines, carrying the end of the link It above the upper end of the incline plane D, and at the same time the latch is raised sufficiently by its connection with the rod g to allow the withdrawal of the coupling-link.
I have shown the latch U of wedge-shape form as the most simple; but as the object is to have it heavier at its upper end, in order to have it" automatically fall to its normal position against the end of the incline plane, it is evident that other shapes may be employed, so long as it is sufficiently weighted at its upper end, or otherwise constructed as to obtain the desired result.
The draw-head B may be of any of the usual forms, it simply being shown to better illustrate the operation of my invention, and therefore no further description of it is deemed necessary..

or cast with or welded thereto, as found most desirable.
