Description

E. M. SNBDEKER'. GAR GOUPLING.
Patented Deo. 22,- 1891-.
Flc-i. l;
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER M. SNEDEKER, OF FIELDON, ILLINOIS.
`CARMCOUFLlNC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,682, dated December 22, 18911.
Application filed August 28, 1891. Serial No. 404,026. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER M. SNEDEKER, of Fieldon, in the county of Jersey and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings of that type adapted to effect the coupling automatically as the cars are brought together and to be uncoupled by hand from the outside of the track, so as to obviate' all necessity for going in between the cars.
illy object is to provide a coupling of the type above named that can be readily applied to any ordinary car, that shall be unusuall 1 simple in construction, inexpensive, and possessing ample strength to insure safety.
lVith these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, fully set forth in the following specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional View of two drawheads, their coupling-pins, and coupling-link, taken in the line .e e in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the draw-heads and couplinglink, showing the draw-heads and couplingpins in section, taken in the line n: Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of one of the draw-heads, taken in the line Iy y, Fig. 2, in connection with one of the coupling-pins, the latter shown in full.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the draw-heads, B the coupling-link, and C the coupling-pins. Each of the latter, as will be noticed, is in the form of a gate adapted to slide vertically through a transverse slot g (see Fig. 3) in the top of the draw-head and in grooves S in the sides thereof. The part D of said gate which constitutes the coupling-pin proper depends, as shown in Fig. 3, from the lower edge of the gate and is made integral therewith. 'Ihis pin D, when the gate is down and the coupling-link is inserted in the draw-head, passes through one of the slots r in the coupling-link, and also through the bottom of the draw-head, which is pierced for its reception, as shown in Figs. l and The part of the gate C which projects upward through the slot g is provided with an eye O for the reception of a hook or ring for connection with a chain passing over sheaves to the side of a car, or a lever or some other equivalent mechanism by which the coupling-pin can be lifted without going between the cars or between the rails.
In regard to the coupling-link, it will be observed that in addition to the two slots r it is provided with Wedgeshaped ends a, adapted as it is thrust into the draw-head to pass under the depending sides (Z of the gate part of the coupling-pin, and thus lift the latter so that the part D will pass between the two wedges d at the end of the link and lift the coupling-pin high enough to clear the flat or central part of the coupling-link. As soon as the wedges a have completely passed beyond the sides d of the coupling-pin the.
latter falls and th us automatically eects the coupling of the cars. The uncoupling is accomplished by lifting the coupling-pin by means of a chain or lever connected with the eye O in the top of the sliding gate C, from which depends the pin D.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupling, a coupling-link consisting of a iiat bar adapted to slide upon the bottom of the internal part of the draw-head and provided with slots 9' for the reception of the coupling-pin, said bar being provided at each end with two wedges made integral with the link, and a coupling-pin having the upper part in the form of a sliding gate adapted to slide vertically through a slot in top side of the draw-head and in grooves provided for its Vreception in the internal sides thereof and havinga central pin D depending therefrom and adapted to pass through one of the slots r in the coupling-link into a socket provided for its reception in the bottom of the drawhead and having an eye projecting through the top of the draw-head for connection with suitable lifting mechanism. all of said parts constructed, combined, and adapted for cooperative action, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of May, A. D. 1891` ELMER M. SNEDEKER.
