DAVID HOIT, OF WEST ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALFOF HIS RIGHT TO ALLEN MIDDLETON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
DRAW-BAR FOR RAI LWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent -No. 225,132, dated March 2, 1880.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID HOTT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at West Albany, Albany county, New York, have invented an Improvement in Draw-Bars for Railroad-Gars,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain' improve ments, fully described hereinafter, in drawbar mechanism for railway-cars, the main ob- Io ject of' my improvements being economy in construction and the relief of the frame of the car from the injurious effects of the shocks and strains to which said frames are subjected.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of sufficient of the framework of a railway-car to illustrate my improved draw-bar mechanism, and Fig. 2 an inverted plan view of Fig. l.
4 A A are the two end or bumper beams of 2o the car-frame, and B B two intermediate transverse beams, situated one on each side of and a short distance from the center line a: a: of the frame. All these beams are permanent parts of the frame-work, being secured to the central longitudinal beams, D D, and
to the side beams, the latter not being shown in the drawings.
Between the two central transverse beams, B B, extend the bars M, which are secured to 3o the longitudinal beams D D, the bolts c e, re ferred to hereinafter, passing through the said transverse beams.
Two blocks, E E, are secured to the longitudinal beamsD D, one block being arranged 3 5 at a shortdistance from each bumper-beam, and between each block and that transverse beam B which is nearest to it intervene bars a a, situated below and secured to the longitudinal 'beams D D.
At each end ofthe carframe is a bumper and draw-head, G, adapted to guides b b, secured to the frame, and to each draw-head is secured a rod, H, which extends through the block E, through the space between the bars a, c, and 4 5 through one of the transverse beams B, be-

be exerted on that draw-bar to which the pull- 5 5 ing force is applied, and this first strain will be resisted by both transverse beams Bl B; and as these are intimately connected together by the bolts c e, and are permanently incorporated with and form a part of the en? 6o tire frame, the eft'ect of this first shock will be distributed throughout the frame, and this eiect will be modilied by the yielding of one of the springs I.
Immediately after this first pulling shock, and when the slack of the coupling-link which connects the car to an adjoining car has been taken up, there will be an outward pulling strain on both bars in contrary directions, and this will tend to force the transverse beams 7o B B apart 5 but as these beams are connected together by the bolts e c the latter have actually to resist the tension from which the frame is thus relieved;
In bumping, the force is iirst exerted on one ot' the springs J, and one of the blocks E; but there is such an intimate connection of the two blocks E E, through the medium of the bars a a and M M, that the shock, modified by the yielding of the spring, will be distributed 8o throughout and absorbed by the entire frame.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a car-frame, ot' two disconnected draw-rods, H H, one secured to a draw-head at one end of the car and the other to a draw-head at the opposite end ot' the car, with the two central transverse beams BB, connecting-bolts c c, and the two springs I I, one for one draw-bar and the other for the other draw-bar, all substantially as set forth.
