Description

' Patented Dec. 5, I399;
A. SAMPLE. CAR COUPLING. (Application flled Apia 2a, 1899.)
(N0 Model.)
Wiknw llivrrnn STATES JOHN A. SAMPLE, OF RANKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-*COUPLING.
SPEOIFIGATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,284, dated December 5, 189 9.
Application filed April 2 8, 1 S9 9 1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. SAMPLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rankin, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplers.
The invention has for its object the provision of a draw-bar with a removable head and also certain other new features in its construction.
With the above object in view the inven tion finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in detail.
In describing the device in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals refer to like parts, in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved coupler. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same on the line X X of Fig. 1.
In said drawings the numeral 1 designates the coupler-head, through which is formed an opening for the reception of the frame 2, which forms the coupler-body. The two parts are held together by passing through them a key or pin 3. A frame 4 is provided, into which the body of the coupler'is to be arranged. Through the rear end of the coupler-body is passed a rod 5,-which is of sufficient length to also extend through the rear of the frame and is held at this end by a washer 6 and pin Serial No. 714,909. (No model.)
7. A cross-piece 8 is fitted at its ends into the frame at 9 and is provided at its middle with an opening through which the rod passes.
Another cross-piece 10 is loosely fitted onto the said rod; but its ends extend through openings 11 in the sides of the frame, and the ends of this cross-piece are connected to the coupler-head by the chains or rods 12. Open spiral springs 13 are fitted onto the rod at the points between the frame, coupler-body, and cross-pieces, as shown.
Should the coupler-head become broken or out of order, itv is only necessary to withdraw the pin that binds the body to the head and substitute a new head. Should the head become detached from the body by accident, the chains will still form a safe connection, or should the bar 5 become disconnected in any manner the cross-bars would prevent a separation of the coupler from its frame. coupler is also simple in construction, practical, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Having thus fully shown and set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupler, the combination with the coupler-body, the frame and rod 5 of the removable coupler-head, the spiral springs and cross-bars mounted upon said rod, said crossbars extending through the said coupler-body and frame, and the chains connecting one of the said cross-bars with the coupler-head, all arranged and combined substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. SAMPLE. Witnesses:
J OHN GROETZINGEB, H. E. BECSER.
