C. MAGTAGGART. PIPE HANGER.
No.` 599,424. vPate WITNESSES @@97, @jzih 02%@ f UNITED STATES PATENT rEicE.
CHARLES MACTAGGART, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS MAC'IAGGART, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,424, dated February 22, 1898.
Application iiled J'une 2, 1897. Serial No. 639,123. (No model.) v
To all whom it may oon/cern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MACTAGGART, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Hangers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of improvements in Io clamps and hangers for girders, rails, dac., whereby tubes, pipes, electric conductors, and other articles lnay be supported in a practical, efficient, strong, and compact manner, the features embodied in the invention being hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
Figure l represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of clamp or hanger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a detached portion thereof of slightly different shape. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on line t Fig. l. Fig. 4 represents a top view of portion of the parts shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the gures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates jaws which are adapted to embrace a girder, rail, bea1n,or other means of support,as shown in dotted lines B, Figs l and 2, the same being provided on their lower ends or bases with bosses B', on whose inner walls are serrations O for engaging with the serrations D of the locking-bar E of said jaws, it being noticed that the openings of the bosses are deeper than the height of the bar E, so that said bar may be raised and the interlocking teeth disengaged and the jaws then separated and adj usted, after which the bar is permitted to drop, thus again causing the interlocking of the teeth.
In order to prevent the elevation and consequent disengagement of the bar from the bosses B, there are passed through the lower portion or bases of the jaws the keys F, which bear against the bar shown in Fig. l, and when the adjustment of the clamps is accomplished the ends of the limbs of the key are deiiected or spread, as shown in Fig. 4, thus preventing improper displacement of the keys and consequent separation of parts.
II designatesthehead of a clip, carrier, or hanger, Which has a transverse slot J therein for the passage therethrough of the 'bar E, whereby said hanger is supported from the clamps or jaws A. Connected with said hangers are the stirrups or frames K, which may be one or more in number, as shown in Fig. 1, the same having a cross-rod L passed therethrough, forming supports for the rollers M, which are mounted thereon, thus providing efficient and convenient means for supporting pipes, tubes, electric conductors, or other devices and moving the same thereon. In order to prevent the rotation of said bolt L, the head thereof is squared or angular and passed through a correspondingly-shaped openin g in the limbs of the stirrups K.
In order to increase the number of stirrups, I utilize the bolt L for the purpose of supporting another stirrup, such as P, the same being provided with an eye Q, which secures said bolt and forms means for suspending said stirrup P from the stirrups K. In this case the stirrup P `may be also provided with a bolt L', and on the same is mounted the roller M', thus providing additional means for sup porting articles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a hanger, the combination of a clip having a head provided with a transverse slot, two jaws adapted to clamp a support, each jaw having a slot in its base provided with serrations, a bar provided on one side with serrations adapted to engage the serrations in the slots of the jaws and means for so clamping the bar in position that the serrations on the bar engage with those on the jaws.
2. In a hanger, the combination of a clip having a head provided with a transverse slot, two jaws adapted toclamp a support, each jaw having a slot in its base provided with serrations, a bar provided on one side with serrations adapted to engage the serrations in the slots on the jaws, and keys passing through openings in the base portion of the jaws for so clamping the bar in position that the serrations on the bar engage those on the jaws.
