IMPROVEMENT DI BALING PRESS.
o. W. `folLLis, or SAN ANTONIA, Turris. Lehm Parent No. 59,832, ma Novem 20, 1866.
, SPECIEICATION- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
'le it known that I, C. W. GILLIS, of San Antonia, in the county of Bexar, and State'of Texas, have invented a new and improved Baling Press, and I do hereby declare that thc followi is a. full, clear, and exact de` wiptinn thereof, which willennhle those` skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to (he i cnnipnnying drawings, forming` part of this specification, in whichi Figure l, sheet No. l, is a. side view of my invention.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of' the same.
Figure 3, sheet No. 2, an end view of the same.

This invention relat to a new and improved press for eompressing'cotton, hay', and orner substances for 1n :i novelmanner ol' applying power to the follower or plunger, and in a novel manner oi securing and arranging tho'doorsis hereinafter ful-ly shown and described, whereby a very simple and eilirient press t'or the purpose spmiiicd is obtained.
A represents the press hex, which is ofohlong form, andhas a horizontal position, with an upright windlass l) at one end ol it. said wirnllass having a sweep C on its upper end. This windlass has its lower part of cone form` and groove-u lor o repo- D', to work around; see tiguresand 3.
Within the .press hex A the follower or plunger E is fitted, and works said follower or plunger, having a socket, ii, .secured lo each side` et' it, in which two rollers, a a, are placed, one directly in front ofthe other, and
hailing, nud it. cons' the follower or plunger has' rods, b, attached to its rear side with a har G secured to them, the ends of the latter hnvingi'rirlinn rolliapplied, which work in grooves, d, in the sides of the press box. This bar servos to steady the follower or plungtr The rope D is attached at one end to the cone` portion'of the upright windiass B, and passes through the press hox transversely, at the rear of the follower or plunger, and around the rear rollers a, and then around a, roller, e, in a har,f, which is attached to the front end of the press lJoX, at the side Opposite t0 that where the windlass B is attached; see figure 4. The rope then passes again transversely through the press box, around the front pulleys a, and `is attached toa post, g, at the front et' the press box, near windlass B.
ily this arrangement it will be seen that by turning the windlass in the direction indicated by arrow 1, the follower or plunger will be operated or moved in the direction indicated hy arrow 2, and by an extremely simple arrangement of means. The follower or plunger also has an equal hearing upon it, and will not be liable to he tilted or eanted at one side, or ont of a plane at right angles with the press box, hence there will he no unnece ry friction to contend with in tho operation of tho follower or plunger, aS iS the case, in a greater or less degree, with other mechanism or means now used for the same purpose; and the device or mechanism contains no parts liable to get Out of repair or become deranged hy use. i
To each side of the press `box A, there is attacher] by a pivot lz, a rack H, into which pawls I, secured to tlic rear ofthe sockets F, catch, as the follower or plunger is moved forward to its work. The racks II are held up to a horizontal position by liars J, and hy this means the follower or plunger is llcld to its work or prevented from slipping hack when the power is detached from the windlass, or ceases to be applied to it.
In moving the follower or plunger hack, the bars J are lowered, and 'the racks Il let down, so as to be out of the wayof thepawls.
At the top of the press box there are two doors, K K', through which the press hox is filled. These doors are hung at one end upon hinges, i, and they are provided at their opposite ends with l)attens,f*, which rest upon the sides of the press box, scc lig. 2, and are secured down upon the same hy buttonshj. In addition to these buttons, a cross-rod L is placed across one door K, and two bars, M M, are placed across' the other door K',
said hars M M being connected to the sides of the press hox hy hinges lc, and lapping one over the other, :rre-
secured hy a key, Z, driven through a slot in lips m, on said bars.
There in also a door, N, at each side of the press hox, secured by bars, 0. These side doors admit of the haie being readily hound and removed from the press box.,
'l'he whole arrangement is extremely simple and ellcient, may be constructed at a moderate cost, is quite portable, and may he applied in all eases where any baling press may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The upright windlass B, wirrope D atiuc.. il, in combination with two rollers a, tted in sockets F at earch end of the follower or plunger E, :1nd tlielroller e in bnr f, all arranged substzintially as and for they purpose set forth'.
2. The bnr G attached to the follower or plunger E, with rollers c at its ends, working in grooves d in the sides of the press box, substantially as and for the purpose specified.' 4
3. The adjustable or pivotod racks H, in combination with t-lie pznvls I, and the bars J, all rranged and applied to operate in tlie manner substantially as mid for the purpose set forth.
4. The securing of'tlie doors K K in a, closed state, by means of vthe battons f, buttons in connection with the hinged bars M M, provided with slotted lips 1n, witlr a key Z driven in them, substantially as shown und described.
I C. W. GILLIS.
