Description

(No Model.)
H. LINDAS.
TONGS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS LINDAS, OF EDGERTON, WISCONSIN.
TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,649, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed April 19, 1897. Serial No. 632,842. (No model.)
T0 cz-ZZ wwnt t may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS LINDAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgerton, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to tinners tongs; and the object is to provide a pair of tongs of this character by means of which the ends of eaves-troughs may be bent up to close the trough, thus dispensing with the application of separate and distinct pieces heretofore soldered to the ends of the trough.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth'and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of the tongs, showing the clamping-jaws partly open; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the jaws when closed.
l denotes the handle-levers, which may be of the usual and well-known construction and which are connected by a pivot 2. The outer ends of the hand-levers are formed with heads 3 and e, one of which is concave on its upper face and the other of which is convex on its lower face.
To the head 3 is secured a clamping-jaw 5, the upper surface of whichv is concave, as
have heretofore been closed by separate land distinct caps or end pieces soldered thereto.
Although I have specifically described the i construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the saine, as such changes or modifications may be made as ciearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pair of tongs for bending up the ends of an eaves-trough to close the ends thereof, consisting of pivoted handle-bars, the outer ends of which are provided with heads, jaws rigidly secured to said heads, the lower jaw consisting of a thin concaved strip and the upper jaw consisting of a thin convexed strip adapted to clamp the body of the `eaves-trough at its extremity, and bend it up to form an integral end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
