Be it known that we, DEMETRIUS FRED- ERICK CHARLTON and FRANCIS Josnrn JEN- NISON, citizens of the United States, residing at Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Forming Bank-Bills into Packages and for other Purposes; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to a press designed particularly for compressing bank-notes and the like into compact packages for shipping,

and it has for its object to provide such a press which shall be composed of few parts, be simple in construction, easy to operate, and which will efficiently compress the notes into a compact package.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the construction and the combination of parts hereinafter particularly described, and then sought to be specif ically defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the press;.

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates upright end pieces resting upon the base 2 and connected at their upper ends by the cross-bar The upright end pieces 2 are formed on their inner faces with vertical grooves, in which are fitted metallic rack or ratchet bars 4:. Between the upright end members 1 is fitted a follower-block 5, which is made hollow on its under side and which is provided at oppositeends, at one side, with tongues (3, which will fit into grooves '7, formed on the inside faces of the uprights 1, so as to guide the follower in its vertical movement between the end members 1 of the pressframe. which are adapted to engage with the rack or ratchet bars 4, so that when the follower is depressed it will be held against upward movement by the catches or pawls engaging with the teeth of the ratchet-bars, as illustrated in Fig. l-of the drawings.

"Within the hollow follower 5 is fitted a plunger 11, which is adapted to move with the follower-and which at the same time is movable independently of the follower by means of a screw 12, which at its lower end is swiveled to the plunger 11, preferably by means of a metallic plate or socket 13, fitted in the top of the plunger, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This screw passes through the hollow follower 5 and has its bearing therein, the bearing being formed by a nut 14, secured to the under face of the follower 5, as indicated in Fig. 2, said follower being also preferably provided with a metallic collar or plate 15 on its top, through which the screw passes. The screw is provided at its top with a hand-lever 16 of any approved form for the manipulation of the screw.

Normally the plunger 11 will fit within the hollow follower 5, so that its bottom face will be flush with the lower edges of the follower.

In operation the follower 5 and plunger 11 are raised by withdrawing the catches 10 from engagement with the ratchet-bars and lifting the follower and its inclosed plunger to the height necessary to enable the desired number of bank-bills to be placed within the press.

The bills will rest on the base 2, and may be adjusted by bearing against the shoulders 9 until they are made to register with one another, the pile of bills at the bottom resting upon a sheet 17, of paper or other material, which will constitute one member of a binding strip or band, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. A similar strip or band is placed across the top of the pile of bank-bills, as illustrated in the same figure. The follower 5 and its plunger 11 are then pressed down by the hand, so as to compress thepile of bills, the follower being held to its depressed position by engagement of the catches 10 with the ratchet-bars 4. The screw 12 is then turned, so as to apply greater pressure than is secured by pressing down the follower 5, and the screw then farther depresses the plunger 11, which plunger will be guided in its downward movement by the sides of the follower 5, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 40f the drawings. When the pile has been pressed to the desired extent,which,it will be observed, will be under the construction illustrated over the entire surface of the pile, the extending flaps of the strips or bands '7 will be brought together, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig, 4 of the drawings, and in that position will be secured together in any suitable manner, so that when the pressure of the plunger is relieved from the pile of bills the latter will remain in a solid or compressed package and be held in such form by the binding strip or band, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This forms a neat and compact package and in the best condition for shipment.

We have illustrated and described what we consider to be the best construction and arrangement of the several parts; but it is obvious that changes can be made therein without departing from the essential features of the invention.

The press is comparatively light in weight, it is strong and capable of exerting considerable pressure upon the pile of bills, and is of few parts, easily operated, and not liable to get out of order. 1

While this press has been designed particularly for forming bank notes or bills into compact packages, still it is not confined to such use where it may be used with good results for other purposes of a press.

If desired, the frame, the follower, and the plunger may be made of standard steel and the end uprights of the frame and the follower may be stamped or pressed into shape, and the ratchets in the end standards or uprights formed by punching portions out of the uprights, so as to receive the ends ofthe springactuated pawls, all of which will be obvious from this statement and need not be illustrated, as'the invention is the same.

Having described our invention and set forth its merits, what we claim is- 1. In a press for forming bank notes or bills into packages and for other purposes,

the combination of end uprights each formed with a series of recesses, a follower extending between the uprights and provided with catches to automatically engage said recesses to hold the follower to its adjustment, a plunger carried by the follower and adapted to be moved to exert further pressure after the follower has reached the limit of its movement, and a screw for actuating the plunger, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In a press for forming bank notes or bills into packages and for other purposes, the combination of end uprights each formed with a series of recesses, a hollow follower extending between said uprights and formed with catches to engage said recesses to hold the follower to its adjustment, the plunger fitted inside the follower, and a screw having its bearing in the follower and connected with the plunger so as to move the plunger after the follower has reached its adjustment, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. In an open-sided press for forming bank notes or bills into packages and for other purposes, the combination of end uprights, a plunger, means for moving the plunger, an adjustable support or bearing between the uprights for said means, means connecting said support and end uprights for holding the support to its adjusted position, and stops or shoulders located at one side of the press for the edges of the notes or bills to abut against to effect a register of the notes or bills one with the other, substantially as and for the purposes described.

4. In a press for forming bank notes or billsinto packages and for other purposes, the combination of end uprights having a groove formed on the inside face thereof, an adjustable follower extending between the uprights and having a portion thereof fitting in said groove, a plunger carried by the follower, means supported by the follower and connected with the plunger for the purpose of moving the plunger, and means connectin g the follower with the uprights for holding the follower to its adjustment, substantially as and for the purposes described.

5. In a press for forming bank notes or bills into packages and for other purposes, the combination of end uprights each formed with a series of recesses, a follower extending between the uprights and provided with catches to engage said recesses to hold the follower to its adjustment, a plunger, a nut secured to the follower, and a screw having its bearing in said nut and connected with the plunger to move the latter, substantially as and for the purposes described.
