Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS F. BETTS, OFNEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND L. G. HUNTINGTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERN-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,705, dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs F. BET'rs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section of my invention Fig. 2, a detached perspective view of a band pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in that class of lanterns which are more especially designed for being used with a coal-oil lamp, and will admit of the glass globe being detached whenever required for cleaning purposes, or when broken or cracked, so that a new one may be adjusted in its place.
The invention consists of a detachable metallic band fitted on thelower end of the glass globe and on the lamp, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the lamp may be provided with a wheel shaft or rod of suffioient length to extend through a slot in the band aforesaid and admit of the wick being raised or lowered without detaching the lamp from the lantern, and also admit of the globe being detached from the lantern and readily adjusted therein.
A represents the metallic top portion or cap of the lantern; B, the guards, and 0 an annular metallic base attached to the lower ends of the guards. 1) represents the lamp, which is secured within the annular base 0 by springcatches E E, arranged in any proper manner.
The top of the lamp is formed with a circular ledge, a, over which the lower edge of a wick of the lamp is raised and lowered by turning this rod, the latter having a serrated wheel upon it, which engages with the wick. This wick-adjusting mechanism is the same as that in common use, and therefore does not require a minute description.
From the above description it will be seen that the band F may be turned so that the slotb may be adjusted or brought to any point to coincide with the rod H, so that there can be no diffioulty in adjusting the lamp in the lantern. This band can be readily withdrawn from the globe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The loose or detach able band F, arranged in connection with the globe G, the annular base 0, and the lamp D, substantially as shown and described.

Witnesses WM. TREWIN, A. TANNER.
